Class Description

This is an one time class as part of an inspirational series, with lessons based on the black history of women of color. These women are an inspiration for ALL GIRLS! Within the pages of American history, there are stories of remarkable African-American women. The stories of some of these women are found in every history book, while others are not so well known. In these classes, we tell stories of the courage, faith, and resolve of these extraordinary women. Through this course, we explore the lives of remarkable women - leaders, businesswomen, writers, athletes, musicians, activists, social reformers, great educators, scientists, and mathematicians, who have left a lasting impact on our country and culture. Students will get to know how these women have courageously defied odds, stood up bravely for their rights and justice, and made incredible strides despite the opposition from the culture around them.
This course aims to educate young girls about the black history of women of color and inspire them to stand up for themselves by discussing how these powerful women changed the world. These classes will emphasize the struggle for equality, respect, and dignity by providing important narratives of women in American History about key events and individuals whose accomplishments continue to influence, inspire, and shape American society and the world today.
The objectives of each class are -
1.	Educate the students about the black history of women of color
2.	Inspire young girls of all colors
3.	Discussion on how these women changed the world

Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou was a Pulitzer prize-nominated poet and civil rights activist. Her first autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings received critical acclaim for its depiction of racism and sexual assault. A leader in black feminism, Angelou worked with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement.

This course will begin with a brief introduction to Mayla Angelou and her contribution of women to it. With a brief discussion about what students already know about Black History, the students will talk about some remarkable women they already know and their contributions.

During every class, students will be introduced to one outstanding woman, and the story of her achievements, or struggle for justice and equality. These classes emphasize the perspectives and stories of African-American women from colonial times through the twenty-first century, to show how they are—and have always been—instrumental in shaping our country. Every class will include innovative activities, group discussions, web quests, and tasks to make learning fun and interesting.
