このクラスで学べること
This is a make-manipulate-learn-and-talk-about class! Get ready for an active lesson with lots of energy, surprises, and interaction! This is Part one of a four 25-minute-part series. You can take this as a stand-alone class or as part of the series. It is suggested, but not necessary, that learners should complete them all in order to get a comprehensive understanding of Mobius strips. In this class, we start with the title: "Infinity and Beyond." Students are asked if they have ever seen the symbol for infinity or know what infinity means. Students will then be guided through making their own infinity symbol which is a Mobius strip. As they cut paper and manipulate, they will learn about the name Mobius strip and some fun facts about it. They will then learn about the manipulation of shapes and be introduced to the concept of topology. Some simple manipulations like compressing a circle into an ellipse will be discussed. We investigate what happens to the Mobius strip when we manipulate and cut it. We experiment and the learners predict what will happen with each manipulation. They will discuss their observations and visualize what happened and explain. Some conclusions about the Mobius strip and an introduction to algorithms of loops is made. Details of looping algorhiyms are discussed in part 2 of this series.
学習到達目標
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to say, "I know how to make a Mobius strip.' "I can explain what infinity means and why its symbol looks like a Mobius strip." "I know what topology means and how it applies to manipulating shapes and seeing the results." "I know what happens when I cut a Mobius strip in different ways, and I can articulate some ideas about the results".

Parents should make sure their young learners are able to follow directions and use scissors and glue safely. The class is fast-pace because it is project-oriented and a learning objective is to have every student complete their Mobius strip. But fast-paced or not, it's never my intention to leave any student back on the early steps while the rest of the class moves on. I would rather know that children who ask for help get the attention they need. I want them to really understand math at a deep level. So if your student is one who might need help keeping up, I would advise that you be available to assist him/her in class.

I've been certified in the public schools for teaching math in middle and high schools. I received additional certified training for gifted and talented learners. I taught math for sixteen years at levels from pre K to high school.
As a chemical engineer and project management professional in the world of business consulting and information technology consulting, I've completed over five levels of college calculus and applied mathematics and used these math and computing skills throughout my career.
The students I have taught had varying learning abilities that ranged from one with pronounced learning disabilities to gifted and talented.
I use a focused, methodical approach. We honed in on trouble areas, really understood the underlying math concept, and drilled for mastery.
