Course Title: Novel Study: "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis Course Description: In this course, students will embark on an immersive journey through the enchanting world of Narnia as depicted in C.S. Lewis's timeless classic, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." Through close reading, critical analysis, and engaging discussions, students will explore themes of bravery, sacrifice, redemption, and the power of imagination. This course aims to deepen students' understanding of the text while fostering their critical thinking, analytical skills, and appreciation for literature. Course Objectives: To analyze the plot, characters, themes, and literary devices employed in "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." To examine the historical and cultural contexts that influenced the writing and reception of the novel. To explore the allegory and symbolism used in the narrative. To engage in thoughtful discussions and articulate responses to the text through short writing assignments and comprehension questions. To develop critical thinking skills by making connections between the themes of the novel and real-world issues. Course Outline: -Week 1 (March 5th): Introduction to Narnia and C.S. Lewis Overview of the novel and its significance in children's literature Introduction to the author, C.S. Lewis, and his influences Historical and cultural context of World War II and its impact on the narrative Overview of course structure and expectations -Week 2 and 3 (March 12 &19): Chapter 1 - 4 Lucy's Discovery Analysis of characters: Lucy, Peter, Susan, Edmund Exploration of themes: innocence, curiosity, adventure Discussion of literary devices: foreshadowing, imagery, symbolism -Week 4 and 5 (March 26 & April 2): Chapters 5 - 8 The Chronicles of Narnia Introduction to key locations in Narnia: the lamppost, Mr. Tumnus's house, Beaver's dam Examination of allegorical elements: Aslan as a Christ figure, the White Witch as a symbol of evil Discussion of character development: Edmund's betrayal, Aslan's sacrifice -Week 6 and 7 (April 9 & 16): Chapters 9 - 12 Battle for Narnia Analysis of themes: courage, loyalty, redemption Exploration of the climactic battle scenes and their significance Examination of the resolution and themes of forgiveness and reconciliation -Week 8 and 9 (April 23 & 30): Presentations and Collaborative Book Report Students will share individual projects, which may include: Character analysis charts Thematic essays Creative interpretations (artwork, dramatic presentations, trailers) Video/Voice Mini-Lecture others Reflection on personal insights gained from studying the novel will be included in the Collaborative Book Report portion.
