週あたり 1-2 時間. Homework will be assignments to practice skills learned in each class so that the children can begin to gain control and some level of proficiency in preparation for their projects. Please gather all materials prior to each class so that we do not have to wait for students to gather materials. Promptness is necessary as each class is very busy, and it is easy to fall behind if you are late to class.
テスト
Class participation and acquisition of the stated skills are used as the assessment tool for this class. Keep in mind each child will make progress at his or her own rate and any progress is worth celebrating!

このクラスで学べること

In this six-week class, students will learn what is in a sewing kit, and basic sewing skills: cutting, measuring, making a running stitch by hand, and sewing on a button. The last class will be a final project that uses all the skills learned, a decorative pillow.

How is your class structured? Each class will be preceded by classroom instructions on needed materials for the class. A complete class listing of materials will also be included in the materials section of this course description. At the beginning of the class the teacher will demonstrate new skills and instruct students on how to accomplish the tasks. All children will need to be on camera for this class, so the teacher can follow their efforts and provide guidance as needed. Each student will demonstrate their skills. The class is very hands-on.

I am very supportive and encouraging. I am not looking for perfection and beautiful products at this point. I want the children to learn new skills they can practice and gain confidence in. I expect children to listen to me and to each other, politely. I usually have no problem with this when everyone realizes they each have a chance to share and talk.
How much will learners get to interact with you and each other (mention specifics like: lecture, games, slides, video clips, discussion)?
This is a beginner level course. Children need to have no prior sewing experience.
One thing they do need is good small motor control which can be exhibited by using scissors to cut a piece of cloth, and being able to hold a very small object, such as a needle, steadily.

These are the class topics:
1.	What is in a sewing kit, threading a needle and tying a knot
2.	Sewing a running stitch- Students will practice on cotton fabric.
3.	Cutting and measuring- using a tape measure, ruler and scissors to accurately cut materials for their project.
4.	Project one- Making a pouch & sewing on a button
5 & 6. Final Project- Making a pillow (the final project will be started in week 5 and completed in week 6 with some work expected at home.) If the children progress at a faster pace than expected, I will add a third project.
学習到達目標
To hand sew a running stitch

Some children may need some assistance from an adult or older sibling when learning to cut and thread a needled. All attempts will be made to demonstrate these skills so that this is unnecessary, but all children learn differently! Some may need a little help. You may want to supervise any use of a hot iron. I will not require kids to use one during class without an adult present.
受講に必要なもの
Learner Supplies
1.	Sewing kit- A box or basket to hold sewing utensils. It could be a shoe box or a fancy sewing box. Scissors- make sure you get good scissors, I recommend Fiskars since they are not high dollar but cut well. You need larger pair for cutting cloth and a smaller pair for snipping threads. Sewing thread-Black and white, a small spool is fine. Sewing needles. A chalk marking pencil. A twelve-inch ruler. A sewing measuring tape. Straight pins. A needle threader (it often comes in a packet of needles). A glue stick. A pin cushion.
2.	Sewing on felt- Running stitch. Black or white felt square - use contrasting thread for this project.
3.	Sewing cutting and measuring on cotton fabric. 1 fat quarter of cotton fabric ( 9” x 18“ ) You can usually buy these at any Walmart or craft store. They can also be ordered online. If you have a relative who sews, any large cotton fabric scrap will do. We will also use this piece for a following week’s scrunchie project. Sewing needle, thread, scissors from the sewing kit.
4. Making a pouch – sewing on a button. A 9 x 12 sheet of felt – any color you like. Scissors, needle, thread to match the felt fabric, ruler, and a button.
5.	Making a pillow- A 1/2 yard of cotton fabric. Not too heavy weight. Do not use an upholstery type fabric. Scissors, needle, thread to match the fabric, ruler, and a large button. Fiberfill to stuff the pillow.
6. Possible third project: Scrunchie- Any scrap fabrics at least 12 x 12 inches- You can even cut up old clothing into sections for your child to use for this class, 1/4 inch elastic, Scissors, measuring tape, pencils from the sewing kit.

Besides being a lifelong academic teacher, I am also a lifelong sewist. I learned to sew from my mother when I was just a small girl, making doll clothes from dress scraps. Since I became accomplished at quilting, as well as making my own clothes. Sewing is relaxing and a creative outlet for me, that I want to and enjoy sharing with others.
