Week 1Lesson 1Peer Relationships, Transitions, and Self AdvocacyLearners will practice a mind mapping technique and brainstorming to consider ways to make friends in high school. Learners will also reflect upon their strengths, challenges, and needs to determine their optimal learning environment.Lesson 2Planning, Prioritizing, and OrganizationLearners will brainstorm and record planning and organizational strategies to help them achieve a positive high school experience. Learners will create a self advocacy letter or plan a functional at home learning space.Lesson 3Note Taking and Writing StrategiesLearners will discuss the importance of note-taking and will practice taking Cornell Notes. They will research and create a KWL about a topic they are passionate about.
The goal of this class is for students to get their high school questions answered and to develop a plan for learning success in high school.
Bridget Smith is a teacher and parent with ADHD. Her focus on Outschool is supporting students with ADHD, other neurodiverse learners, and students with learning differences. She has taught over 5000 learners, including teens, with ADHD and executive function challenges here on Outschool. She is a credentialed teacher who has taught preschoolers through adult learners. Bridget is credentialed by the State of California to teach K-12 Students.

In addition to inviting students to identify some "take aways" at the end of each session. Students will also have the opportunity to fill out the high school planner, including a self reflection sheet. If students wish to receive concrete feedback on their planner, please submit a copy of the completed planner and self reflection within two weeks our last class session成績が提供されます
Narrative evaluation offered if learners submit their completed high school planner and self reflection sheet within two weeks after our last class meeting.
This class prepares neurodivergent teens including autistic learners as well as those with ADHD and anxiety for high school transition. Templates are shared in PDF and Google Doc form to support learners with dyslexia and dysgraphia.
Please print out materials provided before the each session. I will try to provide a Google Doc template as an alternative when possible. A pen or pencil, some paper plain or lined, and some colored pencils or pen would also be good to have handy!
ADHD Medication and Individual Education Plans may come up in the course of our discussion and developing planning guides. My approach will be that ADHD medication and IEP support can be helpful for some learners with ADHD but everyone has to find what works for their family in conjunction with medical and educational professionals. Students are also invited to share high school experiences in class.
