There so many opportunities available to teens today that were not available in the past, but there are also new challenges and changes happening at a very fast rate. Sometimes, challenges and stress may negatively affect teen's health, moods and behaviors. On the other hand, there are wonderful opportunities that can widen their world and help them grow. In this course, we will explore strategies that teens may use to successfully navigate through this important stage of their life. In the first class, students will complete a questionnaire to help them identify some of the positives and negatives for teens in their immediate and larger world, as well as options available to them. Presentations will include a discussion of educational, volunteer and other opportunities and resources that can will help them to develop as they move towards adulthood. The class will be very interactive as students brainstorm what issues and experiences (both negative and positive) can affect teens . There will also be a short video exploring topics for that day. Each class will conclude with a summary of the discussion and main points which will be carried to the next class to successfully build on student knowledge and understanding. Week 1 - Reviewing some of the challenges and issues that may negatively affect positive development and growth Week 2 - Exploration of tools and resources to help manage and navigate through challenging situations. Week 3 - Moving forward and making a plan - how to pursue their goals

In my introduction, I will emphasize the fact that information in the class is meant to be general, and not include individual specific experiences of students. If students' do begin to share any personal or sensitive information, I will, without discounting or demeaning the student, repeat the earlier instructions and redirect back to the previous discussion. The goal is to validate students' feelings and perceptions without invading their privacy or upsetting the other students.
