History Herald: The Free State of Jones- True Story of Newton Knight In this one day class, students will learn the true story of Newton Knight & Jones County, Mississippi who seceded form the Confederacy during the American Civil War to support the Union Army, the United States, & the fight against slavery. During the American Civil War, many people of the south didn't like the idea of leaving the Union. Many people of the South didn't support slavery. One particular person was Newton Knight, a poor farmer in Mississippi that rebelled against the Confederate government, risking his families lives to fight against who he saw as the real enemy. Uniting many from his county and many from surrounding counties, the Free State of Jones would work to undermine and undo the stronghold that the Confederate army had in Jones County, Mississippi, work to aid the Union army through military skirmishes and information, and seek to end the war and the institution of slavery. This is a true story that is inspiring and fascinating that is often lost in U.S. history courses. Come join us for a journey to uncover a dynamic true story of honor, courage, and loyalty. This is a beginner class, so no prior information is necessary. Class will be a lecture presentation with engaging class discussion.
