Would you like to go to space? In this onetime history class, students will learn all about the first men to walk on the moon! Students do not need any previous knowledge about the moon landings! They are very welcome to dress up in space costumes if they have them! (But they absolutely don't need them!) The class will run as follows: 2 minutes: Introductions. 3 minutes: Learners will be asked the question: 'what's the hardest thing you've ever done'? Then we will look at JFK's famous speech ("We choose to go to the moon...") and think about how exciting it is to do something that is challenging! We will look at the space race and the preparations for the Apollo space missions! 5 minutes: Students will be shown a photograph of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins and they will be asked to choose one. They will then pretend to be that astronaut during the rest of the class! We will talk a little about each man and why they were chosen for this very exciting mission. 5 minutes: We will discover what life was like inside the space rocket. We will find out about the toilet, the bed and the food! 7 minutes: Students will be invited to close their eyes for 30 seconds and imagine that they are on Apollo 11. We will put on our (imaginary or real) helmets. We will stretch. We will assemble our equipment and prepare to launch! Then we will find out about the lunar module and talk about the moon landing! We will find out about the Eagle landing and some of the difficulties it faced. (How could they sleep on board? What happened when they broke the ignition key?) And we will talk about poor old Michael Collins too, stuck in orbit taking photos! Students will have the opportunity to discuss how it must have felt. 5: Back down to earth with a bump! We will talk about how the men got back to earth safely and what happened. We will also talk about the Moon Parties which occurred on 20th July 1969. If we have time in class, we will look at what has happened since that first moonwalk. We will talk about the ten other people who have since walked on the moon - and consider why no-one has walked on the moon for many years. Maybe people will walk on Mars one day? 3: Sequence challenge! Working as a group, learners will be challenged to put five events in the correct order in which they happened. Can they beat the clock and walk on the moon! --- * NOTE - I also run this class for 8-10 year olds * I can't wait to meet your learners! This class is one of a series of 'History Detective' classes I run; attend three and gain your certificate! : ) I have a Masters from the University of Oxford, a professional teaching qualification, and many years’ experience teaching English, History and Creative Writing. Classroom Policies: We respect others and have fun! Please feel free to email me any questions you may have. My most important policy: there is no such thing as a bad question! Please come into the class with an open mind and we will all learn from each other. I hope to see you in class!
