I am a licensed social studies educator and homeschooling mom. I was inspired by reading Anne Frank's work as a child and want to share the power of the diary with my students. I also believe that reading the book is a great way for students to explore the many important topics surrounding World War 2 and the Holocaust.

Over the past three years I have been homeschooling my son, who has dyslexia, so I am familiar with the unique challenges faced by dyslexic learners. All students, including those with reading challenges, are welcome in this course and can access the text via audiobook or a combination of audiobook and text. While there will be written notes and information presented in our live class meetings, I will go over this information orally and with multimedia resources as well.
Between classes learners will need to complete assigned readings in the book. The assigned readings will be anywhere from 55-65 pages per week. On average, students can typically complete this amount of reading in around 90 minutes per week. There is an audiobook option available. This is a dyslexia-friendly course. Students who need longer to read have the option to complete all or some of the assigned reading by audiobook.
Students will be given short, informal, in class assessments from time to time in the course to check their understanding of the reading. Students are encouraged, but not required, to post their thoughts on each week's reading in the class discussion board prior to our class meeting.
A paper, digital or audio copy of the Diary of Anne Frank
During our course we will be discussing many difficult topics including the Holocaust, hate, discrimination and death. The book touches on Anne's experience with puberty and sexuality as well. While the book is recommended by Common Sense Media for ages 11 and up, I will accept younger students as long as parents have familiarity with the book and topics discussed. All parents should be familiar with the text or consider reading the parent review on Common Sense Media here: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/anne-frank-the-diary-of-a-young-girl
