This class incorporates social studies with performing and visual arts! Students will cover: Geography, History, Cultural Anthropology, Design, Performance, Puppetry Styles, Types and Construction. They will learn the history and evolution of puppetry, the varying uses and purposes for puppets and who's who in the puppeteer world. They will explore story genre with puppetry, writing for puppetry and puppet operation. We will also craft a variety of simple puppets from different cultures. Half the class period will be exploration, lecture and discussion, the other half will be performing, storytelling, manipulating, interacting and creating. Students need no prior knowledge to participate. Homework will be voluntary and will provide opportunities for children to practice skills, and complete creative projects that will help them explore the fun and functionality of puppetry as a form of expression. Progress will be evaluated through observation and class participation.

Hello! Do you love puppets? Have you ever played with a puppet? Do you own a puppet? If not, that's ok. We will actually make our first puppet together within the first five minutes of our first class! Don't believe me? Well, I can't wait to show you! All you will need is a set of washable markers or a tube of lipstick and some eyeliner! If you do own a puppet that you love, we would like to meet him/her or it so please bring it along with you to share with the class.

Handouts, templates, instructions and links will be provided by the teacher. Most materials required are commonly used in the average home. Lists will be provided as needed with plenty of time for acquiring materials.

This is a more advanced version of a class I already offer with which I wanted to explore deeper. I have collected and performed with puppets for over 40 years. As a teen, I aspired to work as a puppeteer for The Jim Henson Company, but learned that I did not have the physical type they required on set. Instead, I have used puppets in my teaching career to entertain and captivate my students while helping them to understand and remember key learning concepts.レビュー
