This class can be taken concurrently with my high school chemistry course or any other high school chemistry course. A student can complete this lab at any time. Why choose this lab course? Your student will be given hands on labs and have access to help throughout the week. I am a PhD chemist and can answer any questions that come up throughout the week. Students will finish this class having written multiple lab reports and completed 8 hands on labs and 2 virtual labs for a total of 10. Each week there will be a short video that explains the background and steps. The students will be given the protocol for the lab to follow. After the lab, they will either fill out the worksheet or write a lab report depending on the lab. Students perform the lab after watching the video by following the lab experiment steps they have been given. This gives students a chance to work through the steps. Students can gather the materials and do the experiment any time throughout the week. Students will be given a grade at the end of this course. I provide enough background that a student can complete these at any time in their High School Chemistry course.

Overall supplies: A graduate cylinder (100 mL or 50 mL), beaker, a food scale, ruler, plastic droppers and eye protection. Specific supplies for labs: Oxidation Lab: 1 apple (cut into four pieces) and 2 of the following liquids: lemon or lime juice, salt water, vinegar, or milk. Density Lab: 2 sets of 20-30 of the same coin (e.g. 20 dimes and 20 pennies or 20 $2 coins and 30 50 cent pieces). Chromatography Lab: paper towel and washable markers. Chemical Change Lab: vinegar, baking soda, party balloon, ziplock, and rubber band. Catalyst Lab: yeast, 3% hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and optional food coloring. Colligative Properties Lab: two ziplocks, cream, sugar, vanilla, ice, and salt. (making ice cream). Iodine Clock Lab: vitamin c pills (or orange juice but this will cause a slightly different color reaction), tincture of iodine, 3% hydrogen peroxide, and starch. Gas Laws Lab: party balloon, tape measure (or string and ruler), and access to a freezer. Acid Base Lab: red cabbage, three clear glasses or cups, and two or three of the following: clear soda, vinegar, baking soda, tums, soap, or any other acidic/basic household liquids. I have a PhD in Chemistry. I have over 10 years of teaching experience with both children and adults! I have taught thousands of classes in Biology, Chemistry, and some in between (Biochemistry, Ecology, etc).
My biggest philosophy behind teaching is making every concept applicable to the things around us. We can read a textbook and learn about atoms and bonds, but relating that to real world concepts is how we will really grasp the concepts in my classes.
