Did you know that during World War One there was a temporary ceasefire? Let's get together to learn more about the details of this unique event, what is known to historians as, The Christmas Truce. Learn how this ceasefire occurred, the events during the truce, and when it ended. At the start of class, we will review the background of World War I and the Allied and Central Powers, as well as the technology of the war. As a teacher, my goal is always for students to understand the human side of history. I use several primary sources from solidiers to tell the story of this unusual event. Using a slide presentation, I will use images and short video clips to explain this famous story. During class, we will sequence the events of the Truce. A handout for note-taking will be provided to students. Students will be provided with a reflective writing prompt that can be completed following the lesson.

This class is about WWI; and while the Christmas Truce is not violent, the war was and the subject of casualties may be brought up by students. My focus for this lesson is this one peaceful event, a ceasefire. As a history teacher, my goal is to tell both sides of the story, and in this story, both sides are winners.
This class does not teach about the Christian holiday of Christmas. The event occurred during the holiday of Christmas for the fighting troops and is known to historians as, The Christmas Truce.
