Gummy bears and worms aren't just for eating! Each week we will do a different experiment on gummy candy. On Mondays, the directions will be posted along with a video explaining the week's experiment. Because this is a flexible course, you will be able to do the experiment according to your schedule. After completing the experiment, students should post the results in our classroom discussion board. In Week 1 we will observe osmosis and collect and compare data when we see if both gummy bears and worms grow and, if so, by how much. There will be an extra post this week--the students should post their prediction of which mixture will grow the largest bear. A link to another video further demonstrating osmosis will also be provided. An optional worksheet to help track the change in the gummy bears will also be posted. In Week 2, we will make gummy worms dance to learn about chemical reactions. A link to a video further explaining chemical reactions will also be provided. In Week 3, we will use both the worms and the bears to show how sedimentary rocks are formed. A link to a video further demonstrating how various types of fossils are formed will also be posted. In Week 4, we will end the class by making an edible gummy bear (or worm) slime. #academic

Hello! I'm Jessica McKenna. I have a love of learning and enjoy bringing that passion to the classroom. My goal is to inspire your child to be passionate about learning as well.
I have 20 years of teaching experience both in-person and online. My journey teaching on Outschool began in April 2020 and I have been lucky enough to work with learners from all but one continent. In addition to my years teaching on this platform, I have also worked with children ages 3-13 in a variety of in-person capacities, including as a teacher, as a curriculum specialist, and the director of an early education center. I have been the educator of adults as well as children and have had the opportunity to teach other professionals on a wide range of topics including Foundations of Early Education and Positive Guidance in the Classroom.
I have my Bachelor’s Degree in both Art History and English from Rutgers University and am certified to teach Kindergarten through 5th Grade. I am also trained in the Handwriting Without Tears approach to learning print and cursive penmanship and base my handwriting classes and tutoring around this program. Even with the ability to use technology to communicate, I believe that handwriting is an important, basic life skill that should not go unlearned. Cooking is another basic skill that is important, and it offers the opportunity to practice other subjects, most notably math, reading, and science.
My aforementioned love of learning lends itself to my being a life-long learner. I frequently participate in professional development and educational experiences, such as Integrated STEM and Working with Diverse Learners.
When I'm not in the virtual classroom or reading Jane Austen, I enjoy traveling, cooking, and spoiling my cats.
