I will use benchmark passages and/or stories to assess your child's reading level, both in terms of fluency as well as comprehension.  They can then sign up for the course described below:

It is so important that kids read every day, as it will greatly improve vocabulary and provide the background knowledge needed to facilitate learning across all content areas.

If possible, please provide your child's reading level and the name of the assessment that was used to find this out.  If students reading at a variety of levels are interested in the course, I can either add another session or separate this course so that there is a Monday/Wednesday group and a Tuesday/Thursday group, based on parent preference.  The price would be reduced by 50% since each group would only meet with me twice a week rather than 4 times a week.  Let me know if you have any questions regarding this. :)

This course will use engaging, leveled readers and other forms of authentic text.  Below is an outline regarding the structure (This cycle will be repeated for each new book introduced):

1)  The first 5 minutes will be used to build background knowledge and help children make connections between what they know and the book we will be reading that day.

2)  We will spend another 5 minutes doing a book-walk/preview the text.  During this time, the teacher will guide the students to read the front cover and title page, as well as quickly look at other pictures or photographs throughout the book.  Students will make a prediction about what they think will happen in the book, as well as discuss genre and text features.

3)  Students will review relevant vocabulary with the teacher, as a purpose for reading the text will be established.

4)  The teacher will guide the students to read the text.  Each will read a page independently, while the teacher will call on different students to read out loud.  After each page or set of pages, the teacher will guide a discussion related to the focus skill for the day.  

5)  Students will complete activities to deepen comprehension of the story.  Some will involve writing, while others will be more conversation-based.  
 
6)  If there is enough time, students will then extend their learning by completing a writing activity.  This could also be done for homework if you'd like.  

7)  A quiz will be given at the end to check for comprehension.

       - The Butterfly Life Cycle   (Sequencing; Nonfiction Text Features)
       - Deep in the Ocean (Main Idea and Details)
       - Goldilocks and the Three Bears (Cause and Effect) 
       -  Goldilocks and the Other Three Bears (Compare and Contrast; Point of View)
       - Rent a Llama (Point of View)
       -  A Trip to Rio (Character Analysis)
       -  A Bad Movie (Cause and Effect)
       -  Animal Bridge (Story Elements)

Also, If your child reads at a higher or lower reading level and you are interested in a similar course, let me know and I would be happy to add another course to my schedule!

I am a certified bilingual professional with international experience and a passion for working with all learners, especially those learning English or Spanish as a second language.  I have worked as a dual language elementary school educator in both one-way and two-way immersion programs.  I am so proud of not only the linguistic skills that both my native English-speaking and native Spanish-speaking students have acquired, but also the positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors they have developed!  

I have taught children as young as three years old, and adults of all ages.  I find something special about each age.  I have over ten years of experience as a full-time, bilingual elementary school teacher, and began my online teaching adventure in 2017.  I have experience teaching math, language arts, social studies, and science at the elementary school level.  I also teach Spanish, English as a foreign or second language, and mindfulness courses.  I have so much fun connecting with people from all over the world, and I feel so grateful to be an educator!  I love learning and hope to share that love of learning with my current and future students!
