This literature class is part one of a two part series that would cover an entire academic year. Though the title says "Grade 6" the chosen novels and the class work are suitable for a wide range of ages and I welcome anyone at this reading level to join! In fact, the Grade 6, 7, and 8 classes are all quite similar in reading level and could be taken in any order desired. I always suggest that parents choose which one of the levels to take based on the book list and their learner's interests...
Students will learn about character traits, plot, and themes. Students will learn new vocabulary. Students will learn to summarize what they have read. Students will work on interpersonal skills as they discuss the novel with their peers.
I have been teaching these books and others that tackle hard topics for many years. I also teach US History and have a lot of experience teaching prejudice and racism, as well as the historical themes in several of these books.
Students will need to have a physical, digital, or audio copy of the following novels: Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt Hatchet by Gary Paulson Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli I will provide a pdf of the study guide.
Hatchet is about a young boy who is flying in a small plane that crashes and leaves him stranded in the wilderness. The first few chapters deal with the plane crash and it does go into detail about the death of the pilot from a heart attack and the crash itself. Other themes of survival and desperation throughout the book may be difficult for sensitive readers, including the main character grappling with thoughts of suicide. Fever 1793 covers the effects of a disease and includes descriptions of some of those effects, such as vomiting or blood. There are not many instances of this, but if your child is sensitive to this you may want to read aloud to them so that you can skip or censor those parts. Maniac Magee tackles racism through a town that is divided along racial lines. Maniac works to bring the two sides together in the end. There is also the death of a second character, which might be difficult for sensitive readers.
