このクラスで学べること

During this beginner class, students will learn about how race and class intertwine to enforce perceptions about communities without the input of the residents. We will examine different pictures of neighborhoods by PowerPoint, and discover how all neighborhoods have similar components, but in different levels of wear-and-tear. I will lead a discussion with a series of questions and provide additional links for videos that students can watch and discuss with their families.
学習到達目標
By the end of the class, students will be able to understand that residents of distressed communities should not be burdened with changing the perspectives of those outside their communities. Also, students will understand that residents in segregated, higher-income communities are allowed to make choices for their neighborhoods, while segregated, lower-income communities are subject to the whims of those with more resources.

教師の専門知識と資格
In addition to my education, I was also an endurance athlete for four years, which made it impossible to ignore how the built environment was put together. Because I had already received my degrees in African American Studies and Geographic Information Systems, I made a point to educate others to understand that our perceptions of our neighbors is not just shaped by our first impressions, but how we are taught to maintain our first impressions.
