Part 2 deals with mitosis, meiosis, and cloning. It is advised that a student take Part 1 prior to this course however it is not mandatory. If a student already knows about Punnett squares, the basic structure of a cell and DNA, then this class will be the next stepping stone to further their understanding of Genetics. Due to these classes involving labs, I do prefer ALL students to have their video cameras turned on. I can assist them by viewing what they are doing. I also would like a minimum chatroom conversation. My Classroom rules: Listen to the Teacher. No talking while Teacher Pat speaks. If you want to ask or answer a question; please raise your hand. Speak when your name is called. I do prefer video cameras without background during class time. Limit chat room discussions. Enjoy learning Genetics! Day 1 What is Mitosis? Students will use a template and yarn or pipe cleaners to recreate the stages of Mitosis. Students will use a template and pipe cleaners to learn the different steps in Mitosis. Students will learn about Cancer and what normal lung tissue looks like under the microscope vs cancerous lung tissue. Students will sketch parts of a cell and what they observed while viewing the slides. Day 2 What is Meiosis? Students will use a template and two different colored markers. to recreate the stages of Meiosis. Students will use a template to learn the different steps in Meiosis. Students will look for different phases of Meiosis on different microscopic slides. Day 3 Cloning The basics of cloning. Students will learn the DNA cloning of bacteria with plasmid vectors. Students will be able to watch the cloning process of cauliflower/broccoli through a Youtube video. Lab 1 Materials: pipe cleaners, scissors, a sheet of computer paper, and tape. Lab 2 Materials: an African Violet plant or ivy of any kind, scissors and a small pot with soil. Day 4 Pros and Cons of GMOs Do you have any GMO's in your pantry or fridge? Lab: Students will bring three different fruits or veggies to class. (better if they have stickers with numbers on them) and let's discuss if they are truly organic or not.
学習到達目標
Students will learn how mitosis, meiosis, cloning and GMO's all involve Genetics.

I do use Youtube videos that may have questionable ads. Otherwise, I do have them pre-empt them to start without ads whenever possible.
Meiosis does involve sex cells such as eggs and sperm. These terms will be mentioned in this lesson.
Students will be handling a sharp knife so they may need special supervision on Day 3.
***There is a possibility that we may discuss how manipulating Genetics can be beneficial or harmful to our environment or society.
One such topic may be human cloning. *This may be a sensitive topic. I will use my judgment when assessing the students' maturity. I may not discuss this at all.
受講に必要なもの
Day 1 and 2 Supplies: Students will need to print out the templates for Mitosis and Meiosis for the first two lessons. They will need two different color yarn or pipe cleaner pieces that are one inch in length. They need about 10 of each color. For Meiosis we will use two different color markers. Print the following: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1A2Nsg22-CZ1JPm_vLLp-Qlif2qna7jGqpn4NMa6upaM/edit?usp=sharing They will need a medium size onion (or green onions) and a cup of water that it can sit on top of. Toothpicks may be required. A metric ruler will also be needed. Day 3: Bring pipe cleaners, scissors, a sheet of computer paper, and tape. Day 4: Let your child bring 3 veggies or fruits to class, preferably with the stickers still on them. Students will need a cutting board and a knife. (If you feel your child cannot cut independently, then slice it in half prior to class.)
