This 17-week course is designed to cover half of a typical high school level chemistry curriculum. However, this does not mean that interested younger learners should not take this class. Anyone interested in learning about chemistry in an engaging way at their own pace should sign up for this class. Each block of instruction is described below and will include hands-on lab experiments to compliment the material being learned in the class. Each week, a new lesson will be posted for students to complete at their own pace. Each lesson includes approximately an hour of video lecture and includes fill-in-the-blank note pages and practice problems for the students to complete. Block 1: Atoms and Molecules Lesson 1: Matter and Atoms - States Of Matter - Atoms And Subatomic Particles Lesson 2: Periodic Table of Elements - Periodic Table of Elements - Valence Electrons, Ions, And Isotopes Lesson 3: Chemical Bonding - Video: Covalent Bonding - Video Ionic Bonding Lesson 4: Lewis Structures - Drawing Lewis Structures Lesson 5: Naming Molecules - Naming Ionic Compounds - Naming Simple Covalent Molecules - Naming Hydrocarbon Chains Block 2: Moles and Chemical Equations Lesson 6: The Mole - The Mole Lesson 7: Formula Mass and Unit Conversions - Determine The Weight of a Chemical Compound - Easy Technique for Unit Conversion Lesson 8: Balancing Chemical Formulas - Balancing Simple Chemical Formulas Lesson 9: Classifying Chemical Reactions - Types Of Chemical Reactions Lesson 10: Balancing Chemical Equations - -How To Balance Chemical Reactions Block 3: More on Electrons Lesson 11: Quantum Numbers and Atomic Orbitals - Quantum Numbers for Electrons - Atomic Orbitals Lesson 12: Electron Configurations - Electron Configuration and Diagrams Lesson 13: Covalent Bonding and Molecular Shapes - Covalent Bonding Revisited - Molecular Shapes Block 4: Nuclear Chemistry Lesson 14: Isotopes, Half-Lives, And Nuclear Decay - Isotopes And Half-Lives Lesson 15: Nuclear Decay Reactions - Alpha, Beta, Gamma Decay, Fission, And Fusion Reactions Lesson 16: Nuclear Power Plants: Ins and Outs - How Nuclear Power Plants Work Lesson 17: Nuclear Power Disasters - Discussion Of Three-Mile Island, Chernobyl, And Fukushima Disasters This is a flexible schedule course, meaning that there are no live meetings. Each week new videos, notes pages, and practice problems will be posted to the classroom. The completed practice problems will be uploaded to the classroom (either scanned or a picture taken) for feedback from the teacher. There will be a discussion thread where students can ask for help from the class and the teacher. Each week an experiment will be posted that follows the lesson material. To get the most out of this course, the teacher will provide notes pages with blanks for the students to fill in as they watch the videos. Students are expected to complete the practice problems each week as the material builds upon itself weekly. The teacher is always available via message (either in the classroom discussion or private message) and will typically reply within 12 hours, but never more than 24 hours unless extenuating circumstances.

The labs used in this course to supplement the material are all safe and use things found in a traditional kitchen. No special laboratory equipment or chemicals are needed. Everything can be found around your house or in a grocery store. No harmful substances will be used. At times, the use of the stove to heat water is required, but students will be advised to seek parental supervision when performing any experiments that require use of the stove.
