Is your child a zoologist in the making? Is wildlife biology their calling? Let's continue to grow their passion for animals in this self-paced class all about birds. In five separate lessons, learners will explore penguins, parrots, birds of prey, ratites (ostriches & their relatives), and flamingos. For each animal, there will be 3-4 videos (ranging from 10-15 minutes in length) with exciting and fascinating information, along with a Kahoot! quiz to test your knowledge. Each video lesson will presented using a Google Slide presentation with photos, videos, and GIFs. For each group of animals, students can expect to learn... ~Taxonomy (how the animals are classified) ~Range ~Habitat ~Diet (including adaptations that help them get their food) ~Predators (including adaptations that help them avoid predators) ~Mating behaviors ~Threats to their survival ~Conservation I will teach each lesson with enthusiasm (and occasional puns) and offer opportunities for learners to pause and think about a topic before we delve in. Learners are encouraged to post questions or comments in the classroom page during and after viewing the lessons. Each of the 5 lessons will have an optional Kahoot! quiz for learners to test their knowledge. I can't wait to learn about some amazing birds with your learners!

5 週間以上レッスン 1:
Penguins
Let's explore one of the world's most unique birds - penguins! We will explore penguin taxonomy, range, diet, and the unusual adaptations. We will discover how penguins survive in some of the world's harshest ecosystems where predators lurk both in the sky and the sea.
レッスン 2:
Parrots
In our Parrots lesson, we will explore the different groups of parrots, along with their range and habitat. We will discover why parrots have curved, pointy beaks, strange toes, and bright-colored feathers. We will explore the diversity among parrot species and threats causing many species to become endangered.
レッスン 3:
Birds of Prey
Let's meet some of the fiercest predators in the sky. In our birds of prey lesson, we will investigate the traits these predatory birds have in common that help them find and catch prey. We will explore birds like hawks, falcons, eagles, and more to learn where they live, what they eat, and how they attract mates.
レッスン 4:
Ratites
Ostriches, emus, cassowaries, rheas, and kiwis (the bird, not the fruit) are all species of ratites. In our ratite lesson, we will answer many important questions, including... why can't ostriches fly? Let's discover how these flightless birds survive living their whole lives on land and the differences between the 5 groups.

Hi there!
My name is Sarah and I am so excited to explore wildlife, science, and conservation with your learner. I was born and raised in the Metroparks of Ohio, but I currently call the Sonoran Desert of Arizona my home.
I have had a strong love for wildlife and nature for my whole life and have built my career around it. In 2017, I graduated cum laude from Arizona State University with a B.S. in Conservation Biology and Ecology. I am a Certified Environmental Educator in Arizona and a Certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association for Interpretation.
After college, I worked on several wildlife studies in the field studying species like the western diamondback rattlesnake, spectacled rattlesnakes, and Bahamian rock iguanas. I gained experience as an informal educator developing programs for schools and homeschool students at the Phoenix Zoo, Shedd Aquarium, South Mountain Environmental Education Center, and SeaLife Aquarium.
At the start of COVID, I founded an organization that creates wildlife and conservation STEM resources for K-8 students, including a science curriculum program that teaches core science subjects with an engaging animal twist.
My greatest objective as an educator is to make science FUN. My classes cover important science topics while using wildlife and nature as our driving forces.

I offer a series of one-time, multi-day, and ongoing classes. Please feel free to request one-time classes if you do not see a session posted.
One-time classes and multi-day classes always include a live animal. Please check class descriptions for ongoing classes.
