The study of U.S. History is usually done in the scope of the big events. In this full year course, we will examine both the big and lesser known events in American history. We will explore the lives of each U.S. President, each state, and American establishments, and different icons and symbols.

Starting with each U.S. state, we will cover: Who settled it? When and how did it join the Union? What important events happened there and who came from there? What battles and conflicts happened there? What is it most known for today? We will learn what makes each state unique - What state has a law where it is illegal to eat fried chicken with a fork? Where did spam come from? What state produces the most potatoes/sweet potatoes/gold? What is the only state to have its state seal designed by a woman? We will be looking beyond the normal facts and figures and examine the culture - music, food, inventions, industry, etc.

We will then continue to learn about each U.S. President - their education, lives before and after the Presidency, major moments in their career, and what impact they had on U.S. History.

This class will meet twice a week for 40 weeks. This may be longer depending on holiday and breaks. Each class will start with a review of previous lessons, discussions about homework (see below), a 20-30 minute powerpoint lecture, and discussions. I love exploring history and encouraging young learners, so some topics may be expanded on dependent upon learner discussions and questions.

This class is a combination of several of my shorter term (8-20 week or ongoing) classes. If you are interested in a shorter term class, please message me.

I have been an educator on Outschool since February of 2018. I have my MBA and MHA, both of which have taught me the value of conducting research and asking questions. I have a passion for history, organization, reading, and learning. You can usually find me in the middle of 2-3 books or watching a documentary.

I am also an Outschool ACE Educator, which means that I continually seek out ways to improve my teaching skills and knowledge, as well as the learner experience. Some of the seminars/courses that I have attended in the past are: Foundations for Teaching and Learning About Native Americans; The Presence and Absence of Asian America: What Truths Lie Beyond the Headlines; Using the “Diary of Anne Frank” to Amplify Students’ Voices; Painting a Just Picture – Art and Activism.
