Did you know that a small town in Russia is the likely origin of the Black Death, which killed millions of people in Europe during the Dark Ages? Or that only five years before the American Revolution, the Russian Empress Catherine the Great was implementing quarantines to contain a new outbreak of the Bubonic Plague? After reviewing historical examples, this class will also cover the ways in which Russia is dealing with the current outbreak, including digital surveillance of its citizens,...
- - students will learn how Russian leaders have handled plague outbreaks from the middle ages to the present - students will gain knowledge of Russian culture surrounding sickness - students will learn how Russia's response to the current global pandemic compares to international efforts to contain the virus
I'm deliberately offering a class at the intersection of two timely topics: Russia's history and influence in the world, and the world history of pandemics. My experience in history, ability to research in the original language, including digitized medieval manuscripts, allows me to present material nearly unknown outside Russia.
I will provide all necessary readings and resources, including excerpts from medieval chronicles, John T. Alexander's "Bubonic Plague in Early Modern Russia," and news articles.
