In this lesson, students use geometry, number sense, and measurement skills to design their own pennants.  The keyword is PRECISION in these designs.  We want students to understand that graphic artists, engineers, advertisers, programmers, mechanics, builders, and designers of all types must be precise in order to be successful.  Let’s dig deeper and understand the way colors hold symbolic value and the way mascots of all kinds serve as metaphors.  Engineers must plan, draft, edit, and use precision to be most successful.  

Class Activities:
Activity One:  Geometric Thinking and Area with Visual-Mathematical Connections
Here is the first lesson in PRECISION.  Students must use a straight edge to draw a rectangle and explore the area of a triangle visually and mathematically.  Critical questions related to this task will be explored.   

Activity Two:  Making a Two-color Pennant
Next, we will explore how designers use color for a desired outcome.  There is power in color!  Students will choose colors for their pennants after learning about the messages in color use.

Activity Three:  Exploring the Area of a Circle
We are going to add a circular area for a logo on our pennants while learning about the area of a circle.

Activity Four:  Adding a Letter or Mascot to the Pennant
Students will discuss what their team mascot will represent.  Just as colors convey a strong message, our mascots will do the same.  A circle will be drawn with precision in which to place the mascot.

Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

I am a passionate educator with a Masters in Educational Leadership!!!  
I believe teaching should be super -duper fun! My philosophy is that WE all are lifelong leaners.  I enjoy learning new things and often take courses to enhance my knowledge.  It is my belief that each child has a unique learning ability which should be nurtured.  It is a teacher's job to facilitate or guide learning as student's make discoveries and learning gains.  Students should have a choice in their learning and also guide conversations around their progress and goals.  Most importantly, I believe in teaching the whole child from social to academics.

I love to teach reading, math, technology, problem based learning and also crafting/cooking!  I have been an educator for 18 years teaching and leading in both public and non-profit sectors.  I have taught in all demographics including gifted students as well as managed a gifted program for three years.  My most recent experience is Assistant Principal of an Elementary School.  My strengths are designing  & differentiating curriculum for all types of learners and personalized learning.  A fun fact about me is I am launching a clothing line for boys designed by me!
