Some students can find the realization that they have a screen addiction problem profoundly distressing. After this class, please ensure that you speak to your child about what we have covered and be prepared to offer the support they will need to overcome their addiction. You may wish to approach local counselling services to find out what professional support is available to you. Please be aware that addiction is a problem, whether it is screen time, video games, drugs, alcohol or any other addictive behaviour. If your child identifies that they have a problem during this class please seek professional help immediately. It is important to clarify that this class is not a medical service nor does it present therapeutic outcomes. The class is designed to provide students with strategies and tips to help them avoid mobile phone addiction. The course is educational in nature and seeks to provide students with knowledge and skills to reduce their dependence on mobile phones. In this 16-week class, students will learn how to identify and avoid addictive behaviors on social media and streaming sites. Led by an experienced teacher and computer science expert, the course will cover a variety of topics related to addiction and online behavior. Week 1: Understanding addiction Students will learn about the signs of addiction and the ways that social media and streaming sites can be designed to be addictive. Week 2: Developing healthy habits Students will learn about the importance of developing healthy habits and strategies for breaking free from addictive behaviors. Week 3: The impact of social media on people Students will learn about the impact of social media on people, including the role of comparison, FOMO (fear of missing out), and cyberbullying. Week 4: The impact of streaming on people Students will learn about the impact of streaming on people, including the role of binge-watching and addiction. Week 5: How to spot addiction Students will learn how to spot addiction. Week 6: Strategies for avoiding addiction Students will learn strategies for avoiding addiction, including setting limits, taking breaks, and finding alternative activities. Week 7: Media literacy Students will learn about media literacy, including how to critically analyze and evaluate the information they encounter online. They'll explore the concept of "fake news" and learn strategies for identifying and avoiding misinformation. Week 8: Online privacy Students will learn about online privacy, including the risks associated with sharing personal information online and the ways in which social media and streaming sites use their data. They'll explore tools and strategies for protecting their privacy and maintaining control over their online presence. Week 9: The impact of social media on society Students will learn about the impact of social media on society, including the role of social media in shaping public opinion, the spread of misinformation, and the amplification of hate speech. Week 10: The impact of streaming on society Students will learn about the impact of streaming on society. Week 11: The psychology of online behavior Students will learn about the psychology of online behavior. Week 12: Mindful technology use Students will learn about mindful technology use, including the importance of being intentional and aware of our technology use and the ways in which technology can be used for good. Week 13: Alternative activities to technology Students will learn about alternative activities to technology, including hobbies, physical activities, and creative pursuits. Week 14: Building healthy relationships with technology Students will learn about building healthy relationships with technology, including the importance of setting boundaries, maintaining balance, and avoiding burnout. Week 15: The role of community online Students will learn about the role of community online. Week 16-week: Students will learn how to identify and avoid addictive behaviors on social media and streaming sites. By the end of the class, students will have a deeper understanding of addiction and online behavior, as well as practical strategies for avoiding addictive behaviors and using social media and streaming sites in a healthy way. Enroll your student today and help them develop the skills they need to navigate the online world with confidence and resilience! The videos will contain the information required to give students a good understanding of each topic and each one will include homework for the students to undertake during the week, as part of a project. After watching each video and completing the homework assignments, students will be provided with feedback and the specific next steps on how to improve or adapt. Time frame for the Week: Mondays - The teacher will post the information needed for the week. Students can submit questions. Tuesdays - Wednesday - The teacher can answer any questions pertaining to the topic of the week. The students will need to complete any homework assignments and answer any questions in the discussion. Thursday - Students need to have all tasks completed and uploaded in the classroom for teacher feedback and discussion. Students will discuss it among themselves. Friday - The teacher will provide feedback to the class and individual students. Saturday - Sunday - The teacher will be available to answer any questions that the students may have for the week or the next week. Please note: This course requires no prior experience.)
