このクラスで学べること

Boomer loves to take apart stuffed animals, balls, and plastic toys. This is great for learning and brain development in animals.
The same is true for children. Along with the learning aspect, taking electronics apart is great to build self regulation, peek curiosity and promote flexibility.

This is a flex class which does not meet face to face. Students will be expected to record videos, comment on classmates work and work with Nearpod to learn how to post appropriately. Students will have the opportunity to practice appropriate posts online, as well as how to express ideas, to an audience. Students will watch a short instructional video each week, and share their findings on the Outschool platform while practicing online safety in a controlled setting.

Week 1-The class will start by showing learners a video of Boomer taking his stuffed animal apart and why this is interesting for dogs. Students will then navigate to the National Geographic Kids - How things work website. They will pick one video to watch. They will answer the question, What did you watch a video about and what is one new thing you learned. They will post their answer on the Outschool platform. Before posting ideas on Outschool, the learners learners will go through a quick tutorial on Nearpod of how to answer the questions, so the audience will understand.

Then the students will find their electronic that they will take apart. They will need to introduce it via video on the Outschool platform. They will tell what it is and tell what they think they will find inside. Students will go through a quick tutorial on Nearpod about how to talk to an audience on video, so the message is clear without distractions. Once all electronics are shown, students will be taught safety tips of taking something apart. At this point students will start to take apart their electronic.

Week 2- During week 2, students will need to finalize taking apart the electronic. At the beginning of the week, The students have to post a video on the Outschool platform to tell what they have found so far in their electronic and what else they think they will find. They will be reminded on Nearpod about posting videos for an audience without distractions. They need to give us a tour of the parts that have been taken out. They will participate in a written "I have, who has..." game that allows kids to compare the parts they found, it's amazing how many different parts electronics have, but also how many are the same.

Week 3- Students watch a short video on the concept of up cycle. Creating something new out of something that is going to be thrown away. They will be instructed of how to fuse pieces together safely and guidelines about what can be made. They will use the pieces they have to create an animal. They can use tape or hot glue to stick parts together. All pieces of the electronic do not need to be used. They will be asked to create a plan of what they will make and either post the plan on Outschool, or record a video explaining the plan. Learners will be reminded, using Nearpod, about posting for an audience and making sure ideas are clear for other learners. Students are to evaluate each others plans and offer suggestions to 3 others of how to make the creation better. They will go through a second short tutorial using Nearpod on how to offer a suggestion with meaningful ideas and helpful words.

Week 4- Students will post a picture or a video in Outschool to join our Creation Station. Each learner will introduce their animal, tell how they made it and describe characteristics of the animal. Learners will be asked to comment on the creators design and tell what they like about 3 other students animals. The concept of posting comments will be taught through a quick Nearpod tutorial.

I have been teaching on Outschool since April of 2020 and am an elementary school educator who knows how to create hands on activities which empower thriving children of all ages.

I specialize in providing a vast variety of hands on activities that promote the value of social and emotional intelligence as well as the importance of showing children their potential. There is not always a right answer in learning, children thrive in all different ways and I find great joy in helping them discover their gifts and talents.

Over the course of 25 years in the classroom, I have taught 1st grade, kindergarten through 3rd grade media literacy classes, and kindergarten through 5th grade computer application classes. I have also tutored kindergarten through 5th grade students in all subject areas and am TESOL certified. I am an advocate for children and believe in helping them to reach their potential, while understanding all of our minds think differently. Being able to discover how each person finds success is such a gift.

I am a proud owner of Boomer, my Labrador Retriever. He loves to be by me all the time and wants to be part of my teaching. Pets bring such joy and unconditional love, that it just seems natural to involve him in my classes. He has a lot to teach and learn!
