In this fun and interesting three-day class, we'll discuss the fascinating history of the wedding dress, from the violet robes worn by ancient Athenian brides to Meghan Markle's iconic wedding gown. Through storytelling, we’ll analyze the cultural archetypes of ancient and modern brides, and understand the symbolic, historical, and economic settings in which these attires were worn. 

Homework: After each class, learners will design their own ancient wedding dress, their own modern wedding dress, and a wedding dress for the future. Students can draw, sketch, collage, cut and mix, or use any artistic medium of choice.  The designs will be shared during the last class's fashion show.


We'll discuss the cultural archetypes of wedding dresses from different time periods:
-Ancient Greece
-Ancient Rome
-Zhou and Han Dynasty
-Tang Dynasty and its influence on Korea and Japan
-The Middle Ages
-The Renaissance
-Victorian England and the ¨Victorian World¨
Modern times:
-Grace Kelly
-Jacqueline Kennedy
-Diana, Princess of Wales
-Disney princesses: Rapunzel (Tangled), The Little Mermaid, and Cinderella
-Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge
-Beyonce and Solange Knowles
-Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex

Classes will be age-appropriate and will consist of a Keynote presentation, a lecture, videos, newspaper articles, and images to help students acquire and retain knowledge. 

***All topics will be taught and discussed objectively and factually. When applicable, viewpoints from marginalized groups will be explored.

-Reflect on how women's positions in the world has changed throughout history.

30-90 mins a week will be needed to ¨design¨ wedding dresses.

受講に必要なもの

Learners will design (draw, sketch, collage or use any artistic medium of choice) their own ancient wedding dress, their own modern wedding dress and a wedding dress for the future.  Depending on the chosen medium, students might need: sketch pad, colored markers/pencils, paper, old magazines, old pieces of clothing, colored paper, strings, etc.

I have an M.A. in Political Science and postgraduate studies in economics, Human Development, and Gender, as well as a B.A. in Legal Studies. I've been an elementary school teacher for over four years, teaching world history and literature as my main subjects. I'm a member of the Women's History Network.
