Have you ever wondered why men seem to have pockets in everything and women barely get the courtesy of a pocket that opens in clothing? In this class feminism and fashion collide as students learn about the history of pockets (going back to the Middle Ages!) and the gender disparity of pockets in men's and women's clothing throughout the centuries. Students will critically think about how the difference in pockets is related to feminism and the fight for equality. This class will be taught as a lecture and discussion. Students will learn and discuss: - The history of pockets in men's and women's wear in the middle ages. - The evolution of pockets throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, with a focus on women's dress. - The shrinking of pockets throughout the 20th century to today - How pockets relate to feminism and Gender Disparity This class will be taught with a PowerPoint and it will be primarily lecture based with text and pictures. Students will be able to view the PowerPoint through a shared screen. In this class students will be required to be involved in discussions throughout and to think about why dress reform was so important. Because this class includes a discussion aspect, a working microphone is strongly suggested. This history class does not require any background knowledge on the feminist movement or on fashion history.

As always when talking about Suffragettes, European history and early forms of feminism, it is important to note that these women were often fighting for equal rights for their peers (typically white, upper class women). These early forms of feminism are problematic and are a large reason as to why we have more than one wave of feminism. This class will not focus too much on these issues, but it may come up.

History and feminism are two of my most passionate topics and I love when they mix. I studied women's studies while in University and kept digging into feminism and women's history ever since. I cannot wait to share my passion with you.
