We discuss the books at length so make sure your child has read and has copies of the books so we don't give away any plot lines or spoilers.
This will be an twelve week literature class where we will discuss a new book every two weeks.
I will gently guide the discussion on different book topics such as: plot, character attributes and development, themes, symbolism, genre types, literary devices and others.
This will be a time for students to share their love of reading. We will leave most time open for discussion and learn different book elements around that discussion. I have found that readers love to share what they are reading with others and why they love it. This class will give that opportunity to students who love to read. I will also use google slides in my classroom presentations. Some weeks we may have handouts related to the different literary elements we will be discussing. This class can also be used as a literature credit for the school year.
All study questions and vocabulary will be handed out the week before we study that specific book.
Please make sure that students have copies of the books in their possession as we read and discuss each book.

Our book list will be as follows:
Snow Treasure by Marie McSwigan
Letters from Rifka by Karen Hess
Maniac Mcgee by Jerry Spinelli
Poetry selections — Jabberwocky by Lewis Carol
Macavity the Mystery Cat by TS Eliot
Life Doesn’t Frighten Me at All by Maya Angelou
Fablehaven by Brandon Mull

Week 1-- Introduction to the class and the books we will be studying.
--Author sketch of Marie McSwigan and discussion and introduction to Snow Treasure
Week 2-- Continued discussion of Snow Treasure. Questions will be provided ahead of time by the teacher that will include questions
about the plot, setting, and various literary elements in the novel.
-- Go over a vocabulary list from Snow Treasure.
Week 3-- Begin with a vocabulary game from the first 2 novels. We will use kahoot for this game.
-- Author sketch of Karen Hess and background of Letters from Rifka.
Week 4--Continued discussion of Letters from Rifka.
-- What is historical fiction? Kahoot going over the first two books.
Week 5-- Author sketch of Jerry Spinelli. Go over any unfamiliar vocabulary in Maniac Mcgee
-- Finish study questions from Maniac Mcgee.
Week 6- Discussion of the different characters in the book-- direct verses indirect characterization
                and static verses dynamic characters.
Week 7-- Author sketch of poetry authors. Begin the study questions.
Week 8-- Finish up the study questions about the poems we have been studying.
-- Kahoot vocabulary game going over the last 3 books.
Week 9-- Author sketch of Brandon Mull and what is fantasy.
--Go over any unfamiliar vocabulary and study questions.
Week 10-- Finish Fablehaven discussion and discuss symbolism used in the book.
Week 11- Play Kahoot game going over all the books, themes and literary elements studied during class.

This class will rely heavily on student discussion. We will need to cancel class if there are not at least 4 learners.

I graduated with a BA in English and Spanish for secondary school teaching. I have always loved reading and teaching book studies to students of all ages. I have taught English, Spanish, ESL, history and religion classes to students ages 7-18 in the public schools and in private settings. In an effort to better understand and teach World War II and religion classes I have taken a 10-week course in Introduction to Judaism. I have taught many book studies to ages 8-17 including but not limited to: The Old Man and the Sea, Lord of the Flies, Where the Red Fern Grows, The Red Badge of Courage, The Great Gatsby, The Call of the Wild, The Outsiders, The Scarlet Letter, Tom Sawyer, Maniac Magee, and others. I am currently teaching a Middle School Literature class, Keeper of the Lost Cities class, and Fablehaven book club on Outschool for ages 10-14. Reading is one of my passions and I love sharing that with my children and my students.
