This class will take learners on a journey through the lives of some of the most famous people during the European Renaissance Period. To aid us on this journey, each learner will receive a journal to add to each week!

During this 12 week class, we will be learning about historical individuals, their lives, and their contributions during the time considered to be the "rebirth" of Europe. In class, we will use visual aids and discussion to learn more about each individual, while out of class, we will learn even more through additional printables, project making, and by reading books from the book series “Who Was”. This series of books brings a lot of powerful information on people, places, and events to children in a straightforward way. These books appeal to both boys and girls and are designed for seasoned readers and reluctant readers alike!

Each week, we will meet to discuss the book we read during the previous week, with the exception of the first week, that is an introduction/activity based class (we will not read books in class). Learners will also be asked to make and bring, a book based project. This project is meant to spark some creativity, help with those that really benefit from hands on learning, and help bring history to life. Projects can be drawings, paintings, Lego builds, dioramas, a poem, or anything your child would like to create, to express their vision of what they learned. Projects will be shared during the class, which will encourage public speaking.

Prior to our first class, learners will be supplied with a journal, which can be made prior to, or during, our first class. Each week, I will supply learners with items to put into their journals, that correlate with the book of the week.

Our first class will be an introductory class, where we will set the structure of future classes and learn more about the Renaissance Period in general. Future classes will be structured with a short introductory period, discussion time, in class visual aids, and sharing of projects.

Why take this class?
I like to approach learning from multiple perspectives. I want learners to enjoy learning and feel comfortable with their ideas. Using reading, audio and visual aids, printables, discussion, and hands-on learning, allows learners to experience what they are learning, not just remember what was put in front of them. My goal is for learners to learn and have fun while doing it, in hopes that they simply fall in love with learning.

Ages or grades of learners-
This class is designed to allow for students of various ages to participate, however, I would say the average range is 8-12. I have had learners outside this range, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Books required-
No books are needed or required to be read prior to the first class. We begin reading AFTER the first class, meaning that books can be ordered as late as after the first class. These books can be purchased, downloaded, or borrowed from the library, but the list is as follows (in order they are discussed in class)…

Who Was Joan of Arc
Who Was Leonardo da Vinci
Who Was Christopher Columbus
Who Was Michelangelo
Who Was King Henry the VIII
Who Was Magellan
Who Was Ponce de Leon
Who Was Queen Elizabeth I
Who Was William Shakespeare
Who Was Galileo
Where is the Vatican

Books can be on tape, read, or read to learners, that is left up to the learner and guardian discretion. The books range from $3-$6 and can be purchased or downloaded, but can also be borrowed from the library.

NOTE TO PARENTS: I do not always have classes available to be auto-scheduled, however, please reach out to me if you would like to schedule a time for this class that is unlisted. I am also available for 1 on 1 teaching, though please note that the costs are different for 1:1 versus group classes.

This class looks at Europe right after a very dark time in history, though we won't discuss the Black Death or plague often, it is mentioned a couple times. Also, each person studied in this class had some unique life experiences... some were not great. Joan of Arc was burned for her beliefs, Galileo was imprisoned for his findings, Christopher Columbus treated many Native Peoples unfairly, however, multiple perspectives will be shown in the books themselves and also through the teaching time in class. In class we might do a Kahoot, an online game. If we do, I will put a link in the meeting for learners to click on and they will be able to join a private game. They will NOT need an account or search the web. I am a verified Kahoot teacher. Slides will be shared during teaching times and they will be shared from my screen, and should we use YouTube, which isn't often, I will share my screen.
受講に必要なもの
Students will need a copy of the book though it doesn't have to be present during class... for those that might need to return library books prior to class, no worries. I would recommend using post-it notes for learners to take down ideas while reading. This makes it easier to share thoughts in class. I would also recommend having a notebook and pencil handy for other note taking during class. I do not focus on learners taking notes but if they would like to remember something, having those items makes it easier.

I have been a teacher on Outschool since 2020 and I teach on 2 additional online platforms. I have a biology background, however, I studied US and World History for 3 years in college, as well as 2 years of Chinese. I have also trained in a non-credited format, for many years, with an author and speaker who specializes in teaching children character qualities.

I have always enjoyed teaching. My first teaching position was in Moscow, Russia, teaching English as a second language. Since then, I’ve taught in various settings which include a cooperative, a preschool, and as a tutor in the areas of math, science, and English. I also am a homeschool mom!

I have taught this class to different groups at a cooperative, for both lower and upper elementary students. I enjoy teaching a subject or principle and including different areas of study along with the original idea.
