The year 2020 was like no other. We should use our experiences to learn and become better. This class will follow the 3 steps of emergency preparedness make a plan, build a kit, and stay informed. While thinking about emergencies and disasters can be scary, providing the knowledge and skills to stay safe in these situations will ease fears and keep them safe. Please note I will not be teaching any medical information or how to perform any medical services. The first class will focus on the concepts of making a plan. It encourages collaboration with the family to determine a sheltering plan, an evacuation plan, and a communication plan. We will discuss what specifics should be considered in each of these plans and how often it should be updated. The second class will focus on building an emergency kit. Again it encourages collaboration with family and discusses the basic components of an emergency kit for the home and on the go while considering special needs of their family such as food supply and other survival items like flashlights, etc. This lesson will not discuss in depth information about medical needs or medical supplies or how to provide any medical services such as first aid. The last class will focus on how to stay informed before, after, and during an emergency situation. In collaboration with their family, they will learn how to determine threats in the area they live, how to receive information when the power is out, and the difference between weather alerts such as warnings and watches. The class will involve some lecture to exchange basic ideas, but the goal is for students to take the information from the beginning lecture and put it to use and generate a final product such as a written emergency plan and an actual kit. Therefore, all learning modalities will be included in this class. No prior experience or knowledge is required for this course. This course will benefit all students. I currently am employed by my state's Office of Emergency Preparedness. I work closely with subject matter experts regarding all types of emergencies and build training courses for emergency professionals. I look forward to helping your students feel confident and prepared in all situations.

This class discusses emergency situations mainly weather events such as tornados and hurricanes and flooding. These devastating events can be traumatic to adolescents, but the goal of this class is to empower them and provide them with the knowledge and skills to prepare for such events in order to stay safe and help family and friends. I have screened all of my material to ensure it is age appropriate and will focus on the positive impact of preparation. I encourage collaboration with parents during all aspects of this class such as making a plan and building a supply kit. Parents should talk with students beforehand regarding the different types of emergency situations that may arise and impact a family and determine before enrolling students in this course if it is a good fit for their child emotionally and mentally. I will be glad to answer any questions you have in advance regarding this class just email me.
