Tutoring class can support students with a 1:1 experience that fully engages students to process new information and make sense out of it. With the 1:1 class, students share that they readily feel the joy of learning at their own pace, with low distractions and stress, and lots of humor. These elements are associated with high level thinking, according to brain researchers. My goal in offering tutoring sessions is to see students thrive and become excited about their own abilities to expand their horizons. In my experience, giving students an opportunity to comment and discuss is a significant path to deep learning, connecting learning to their background knowledge. For learning about ideas and facts, there are a variety of on-line resources and tools that help us bring social studies alive and increase student engagement. In tutoring sessions, I like to make use of these whenever possible, as a means of enriching and reinforcing learning. Scheduling: If you are interested in this class but you have special scheduling needs, please contact me. We will try to work out a scheduling that meets your needs. -- Miss Mollie Types of tutoring session goals - Examples: -instructional program, -practice with various kinds of maps, chronology, data sets, image analysis -study for Geography or History Bee, -writing to inform/explain, argue, analyze, evaluate, synthesize -source analysis - examining information sources and styles & test for bias and credibility Curriculum--Instructional Example for Geography See below. This can be tailored to meet specific student objectives. Week 1: Where I live (town, county, state/province, country, continent) Week 2-3: Communities (age appropriate introduction to government (public safety services- police, fire) , economy (trade/services) and social/cultural features like music/arts/hobbies. (Generally, I don't encourage students to share their exact location, for privacy reasons. If you choose to share the name of your State or region I would depend on your judgement.) Students can interview relatives to create a family tree, identifying the names, locations and stories of ancestors. Week 4-5: Landforms Week 6-7: Map Features - Introduce basic parts of a map, practice evaluating maps Students can create a map -theme is their choice, for example: treasure, community, amusement park, fantasy. Week 8-9: Political vs. Physical Maps - Examine and compare political boundaries to physical boundaries Week 10: Climate and Climate Maps Week 11-14: Ecosystems (includes climate/location/animals/landforms, etc) An alternative to the above might be to include more emphasis on the World, looking at continents, cultures, landforms and history around the world. 2. Skills Skills that I like to build into ongoing classes (example: geography) include: reading a map, understanding basic geography terms, compass/direction, reading for meaning and writing to demonstrate understanding. If there are particular skills you would include in our class goals, let's add them! 3. Independent Work: are you interested in projects assigned outside of class? Or, would you prefer all work to be done in class? 4. Technology: We will use the Outschool classroom. Other technology may be introduced to meet learning objectives. 5. Assessments: assessments help us see if we are meeting our objectives. These could include art projects, traditional brief quizzes, game quizzes, interviews, writing, etc.
