Students will use a soft-boiled egg as a model of Earth. The egg shell represents the crust of the Earth, thin, cool and rigid. The white of the egg is the mantle -- hot and semi-solid. The yolk serves as the outer core -- hot and liquid. (The egg analogy does not have an inner core.) The class will employ "Egg Geology" (as described above) , discussion and lecture, PowerPoint slides, notes sheets and diagrams. In addition to the location and physical properties of Earth's layers, we will...
Students will be able to name and describe the location, properties, and behavior of planet Earth's main layers. Students will be able to compare/contrast the layers of a soft-boiled egg and the layers of their home planet.
I am Pennsylvania certified in Earth Science.
1) One soft-boiled egg (Earth model): Bring the water to a boil, add the egg, and reduce the heat to an active simmer. Cook for 6 minutes. Put the egg into cold water until it is cool enough to handle. 2) A plate or bowl for the egg, and a utensil to crack the egg. Maybe paper towels, just in case. 3) Any needed worksheets and diagrams will be provided, and should be printed out before the class begins.
