During this class, students will explore Diwali, a popular festival of India. We’ll celebrate this day by drawing a Travel Girl character wearing a sari, traditional clothing for Indian women. In this drawing class, students will draw a celebration featuring lights, fireworks, flowers and more. Students will enjoy sketching and coloring the festive scene. Travel Girl is a character created by Teacher MoMo. The Travel Girl travels the world and explores different culture. This class is one of several drawing classes featuring this character in a unique cultural setting. First, the class will begin with an introduction to the basic facts about Diwali. In India, Diwali is the famous "festival of lights" that is celebrated for five days. Historical, it was a celebration for the Hindu religion, but nowadays, according to news reports, Diwali is a national festival that is celebrated in non-Hindu communities. Across the country, clay lamps are lit outside of homes to represent the good light overcoming the darkness in life. Second, students will sketch a special picture of a Diwali celebration inspired by the teacher's picture. Students will be able to decide colors, patterns, and place of items, so they create a personalized picture. Lastly, students will color the picture using color pencils and pens. Students will end the class with a beautiful Travel Girl drawing and know more about Diwali as it relates to modern day celebrations. As the teacher, I will guide students to create a unique drawing that reflects their personalities and curiosity about the festival of lights.

I am passionate about teaching appreciation of our world's cultures, societies, and people in a fun and engaging way that will spark a lifelong curiosity about our global community and a desire to be active and productive community members. I would like to work with learners from 6 to 18 years old. I have a degree in Sociology from UCLA, visited more than 30 countries, and lived/taught in five countries. I love to explore our global community from teas to art to traditional clothing.
Since 2005, I have taught English as a foreign language. I have taught in Asia, Central America, South America and North America. I have taught all age levels from young learners to middle school students to college students. For the past five years, I have been teaching English online to very young learners in China.
I believe learning should be fun, interactive and relevant to students' lives. Students should be inspired and encouraged to be active learners and full participants in developing their knowledge of the world.
On a personal note, I have two big dreams that I'm pursuing now. The first is to live in London for a year as a writer. Because of the Covid pandemic, I am not sure when this will happen. The second is to publish The Next Great American Novel. (I have a Master's degree in Nonfiction Writing from USC.)
