In this class, students will learn how to write a comic. Their comic will be inspired by Dav Pilkey's 'Dog Man' books. We will look at part of a 'Dog Man' book together. We will notice common themes throughout the book, including illustrations, language, and speech. Students will learn how to draw the famous character from the book. They will use their character to write their own comic. Students will be encouraged to use speech bubbles in their comics. If time allows, students will have the opportunity to share their comic with one another at the end of class.

A comic template will be provided. This template should be printed off before class. Students will also need a pencil and crayons/markers.

Hi! My name is Melanie Vasquez. I am excited to meet you!
I teach academic classes directly related to the common core standards for language arts and mathematics. Every class I teach has a clear objective that your child will practice throughout my lesson. My hope would be for your child to take the new skill they learn and apply it to their future learning.
I am very passionate about teaching. I have my bachelors degree in elementary education, with an endorsement in reading. I currently hold an elementary teaching license in Illinois.
I have been teaching elementary students for the past ten years. I started my teaching career as an Academic Resource teacher working with students in preschool through eighth grade. I then moved on to teaching first grade students for the past six years. In both of these teaching roles, I taught and assisted students in their journey to better understand math and literacy concepts. I use hands-on teaching strategies to help students concretely master new learning objectives.
As a teacher, it is my job to help children learn. I am committed to teaching valuable academic lessons, that are age appropriate, and will help your child grow their knowledge.
