このクラスで学べること
Students will enjoy making their own DNA code! Using beads or Rainbow Loom bands, they will make a single or double strand of a genetic sequence that accurately represents a real genetic sequence. We will begin by discussing what DNA is and figuring out how many different combinations can be made using just four nucleotides, as well as real world applications such as genetic testing and medical treatment. We will then compare real genetic sequences of different living things, exploring how...
Students will be able to define DNA and name the four nucleotide bases. Students will explain how DNA is similar and different in a variety of living things. Students will make a model of a DNA sequence. Students will demonstrate, using their model, how mutations can occur in a DNA sequence.
I have taught this lesson as part of museum classes and camps and have seen how effective it is in helping students visualize DNA. It's a lot of fun!
クラス登録時に 1 の学習素材が提供されますFor this activity, students will need beads in four different colors. Red, blue, yellow and green are preferred, but other colors can be substituted if these are not available. Students will also need EITHER two pipe cleaners or two strands of string or elastic. Beads should be able to fit comfortably onto the string or pipe cleaners. If using string, students may need a scissor to cut the string to the appropriate length. Students should have a flat work surface on which to place the beads and the work in progress. If you have a color printer available, it will be beneficial to print out the DNA sequences so that your student can refer to them.
