In this 6-week introduction to Trigonometry, learners will define the sine, cosine and tangent ratios, derive and apply the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines, apply trigonometry to solve real-world problems and build and use a clinometer. Session 1: Course Introduction and Background Knowledge --> In this session, we will review critical geometry and algebra skills such as similar triangles, area of a triangle, right triangle terminology, how to use a protractor, and how to set up and...
When I first started teaching Geometry in 2012, I was honestly a little nervous about teaching trigonometry. I had remembered it as a subject that I had dreaded when I was in high school. Oddly enough, when we got to the Trigonometry chapter of the _Discovering Geometry_ textbook that my school was using, I found myself totally in love with it. It is still one of my favorite subjects to teach -- I think in part because it still fills me with such wonder and awe. It is math that truly feels magical!
Learners will need: A protractor (a small, transparent plastic one is what I recommend) A ruler A graphing or scientific calculator that can perform trigonometric functions and their inverses (If you are looking for a recommendation, a TI-30X IIS is what I personally prefer, but other scientific or graphing calculators will work just as well) To make a clinometer for Session 3, you will need: A straw Clear tape String (must be flexible and relatively thin....cotton string that is a thickness somewhere between thread and twine is best -- I will show examples in the first class!) A metal washer Handouts and homework will be provided. Learners will need the ability to download and print PDF documents from the Outschool Classroom.

Learners should take this course after Algebra 1 and *at least* a quarter of high school level Geometry. Typical learners will probably find this unit most useful toward the end of high school geometry, or just after it. Before enrolling, learners should have a solid understanding of topics such as The Pythagorean Theorem, similar triangles, ratios and proportions and solving algebraic equations.
I have been teaching since 2006 and my specialties are Pre-Algebra, Algebra and Geometry. Although I have been focusing on math education for the majority of my time as a teacher, I started my career in the sciences. I have a biology degree from...
