This Decolonized U.S. History course is the first of a two-semester long course. This course should be taken concurrently with my 11th-grade Revolutionary Rhetoric English course. Throughout the first 14 weeks, students will examine primary and secondary sources from various American perspectives (i.e., Indigenous, Colonial Settler, African American, and Immigrant). In this way, we will explore our nation's origin and key political events to determine who we truly are. Live sessions take place once per week. New material (including vocabulary) will be provided during each class.

Students will also learn grade-level appropriate vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills.

Homework will consist of readings with text-dependent questions and short answer questions. Two original essays and a project will also be required during the course.

🎓Units of study include:

📚Unit 1- All About Us
📚Unit 2- Colonialism
📚Unit 3- Transatlantic Slave Trade & Revolutionary War
📚Unit 4- Civil War
📚Unit 5- Reconstruction

Week 1--Overview of Primary Source Analysis
Week 2--What is an American?
Week 3--The Wampanoag and The Pilgrims (Essay #1 Due)
Week 4--The First Thanksgiving
Week 5--Migrations and Transitions: King Philip's War
Week 6--Salem Witch Trials
Week 8--The Transatlantic Slave Trade: Middle Passage (Maafa)
Week 9--Revolutionary War: The Declaration of Independence and the Founding Fathers & Lord Dunmore's Proclamation (Essay #2 Due)
Week 10--In Search of Freedom: Court Cases involving enslaved African Americans & The Underground Railroad
Week 11-- John Brown & The Civil War
Week 12--The Civil War & Reconstruction
Week 13--Reconstruction (cont'd)
Week 14--Convict Leasing (cont'd) (Freedom Papers Project Due)

My teaching style is interactive. I am not the sage on the stage. Instead, I am a facilitator and guide. Therefore, lecture time is limited to 20 minutes of each class period. The remaining class time is allocated to a whole-group discussion, think-pair-share, and Socratic Seminar. In this course, we learn and grow together.

学習到達目標

Students will learn to analyze primary and secondary sources for accuracy and reliability. They will also learn to exchange ideas deliberately and respectfully, which is lost art in contemporary times.

War images may be violent and disturbing. Discussions of the Native American wars and the Transatlantic slave trade may be unsettling. Please be sure to review the weekly course descriptions. Students who cannot attend can notify me in writing and watch the recordings on their own time.
