In this 2-day course, students will gain an understanding of the holiday Día de Los Muertos which is celebrated in Spanish-speaking countries and territories throughout the world. Students will gain an understanding of the questions words “dónde-where” and “por qué-why” and will be able to discuss where and why this holiday is celebrated. Students will be introduced to the vocabulary below and be able to label a Día de Muertos “ofrenda-altar” and talk about the significance of the different items.

Vocabulary:
-Día de Muertos- Day of the Dead
-Las Velas- Candles
-La Comida- Food (we will discuss several different foods that are important to this day)
-Los Ancestros- Ancestors
-La Ofrenda- During the Day of the Dead it is an altar that hosts various items to honor and celebrate loved ones who have passed. -We will discuss some of these items in more detail during class (Pan de Muertos, Las Flores, Calaveras de Azucar, Las Fotos etc.)
-El Maquillaje- Makeup

TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Language or Education Background (Bachelors Degree and/or Teaching Certificate)
2) Native or Fluent Speaker
3) 5+ Years of Experience Working With Youth
4) Have Travelled or Lived in a Country or Territory Where Language is Spoken.
5) Believe in Creating an Inclusive and Welcoming Environment For All Students to Learn

*Teachers who conduct this class have participated in Día de los Muertos celebrations at cultural centers where they studied Spanish OR during their travels in Central/South America. Teachers who do not personally celebrate this holiday have also studied this celebration in their courses of study at university while earning their Spanish bachelor's degree.

There is no mandatory homework assigned in this course however, students will get access to a vocabulary guide and a coloring sheet they can use to review the new vocabulary words in between meetings.

In this course, the teacher will screen share a Canva presentation with students. Students will not have access to the presentation directly but will be able to view it through the screen share feature on Zoom.
