In this flex class, students will be taught a writing skill, given a surprise picture prompt, write a creative story, share it with their classmates, give and receive peer comments, and learn from personalized teacher feedback. Each week the teacher will provide students with a pre-recorded lesson that teaches a writing skill (using adjectives, dialogue, onomatopoeia, etc.). Week 1: January 1-7 Types of Sentences Part 1: Declarative Week 2: January 8-14 Types of Sentences Part 2: Interrogative Week 3: January 15-21 Types of Sentences Part 3: Exclamatory Week 4: January 22-28 Types of Sentences Part 4: Imperative Week 5: January 29-February 4 Types of Sentences Part 5: Incomplete Sentences and Run-Ons Students will then be given a fun, cute, or silly picture to use as their writing prompt and base for their creative story. The teacher will facilitate brainstorming time by providing students with questions to consider, a list of words they might want to use in their story, as well as some ideas to help get them started. Students are expected to use the writing skill(s) they learned in the lesson that week and show an understanding of the topic in their story. For example: Skill - using dialogue. The student uses at least two sentences of dialogue between two or more characters. After writing their story, students will post it to the classroom (typed or as a photo) for other students to read and comment on. A list of possible comments will be given for students to choose from so that peer feedback remains positive. Later, the teacher will offer optional feedback to students. Some students prefer to keep their classes strictly fun and not "graded" or "school-like," so teacher feedback is only given if the student asks and would like the extra help and suggestions. Weekly Schedule: Tuesday: - The pre-recorded writing lesson will be posted for students to view - The teacher will make posts to interact with the students and to answer any questions about the lesson topic Wednesday: - The teacher will post the picture prompt for the week and a variety of brainstorming ideas that students can use - Students can respond with ideas they have or might like to include in their story - Students can begin to work on writing their story - Students who have finished their story can post it to the classroom and begin responding with peer comments to others Thursday: - The teacher will respond to any questions that may arise while students work on their stories - Students continue to work on their stories - Students who have finished can post their story to the classroom and respond to others Friday: - All students should post their finished story to the classroom by Friday evening to allow time for peer comments and interactions *If a student has requested specific feedback and critique from the teacher, please allow 24-48 hours to receive your feedback/comments
