In this hands-on workshop course designed for 10- to 13-year olds, we will explore various lettering styles, adding artistic touches to everyday handwriting. (14- and 15- years olds are very welcome! But the course is targeted to tweens.) The class begins with several simple techniques, then progresses to multi-step styles like graffiti letters. The course mixes demonstration, workshop time for students to practice lettering, and "5-minute challenge," an activity that I designed to spark creativity and inspiration. Vocabulary and concepts from font design are introduced during instruction and demonstration. No previous art experience is necessary; the course is designed for students who are willing to learn and try new techniques. Supplies that are available in the home can be used: plain paper, thin and thick markers or lettering pens, pencil, eraser, ruler. Students need several sheets of paper (a notebook, sketchbook, or journal works well), a pencil, a ruler and a good eraser to begin. Optional supplies include color pens, markers or pencils.
