In this 12-week class, we will cover consumer math topics. We will practice in class, students will have an in-class handout and an after-class practice sheet after each class.

Course Overview:

Consumer Math is a practical, hands-on course designed to equip students with the essential math skills needed to manage personal finances in the real world. In this course, students will explore topics such as budgeting, saving, investing, taxes, credit, loans, and insurance. Through interactive lessons and real-life examples, students will gain the tools they need to make informed financial decisions and prepare for the financial responsibilities of adulthood.

The course combines teacher-led instruction with group discussions, in-class activities, and polls to keep students engaged. They’ll practice solving real-world math problems, work on practice sheets, and review key concepts together to reinforce their learning.

Key Topics Covered:

Budgeting & Money Management: Learn how to create and manage a personal budget, track income and expenses, and develop strategies for saving money.

Banking & Credit: Understand how checking and savings accounts work, how credit scores are calculated, and how to use credit responsibly.

Loans & Interest: Dive into the math behind loans, interest rates, and monthly payments, and understand the long-term impact of borrowing money.

Taxes & Deductions: Gain a clear understanding of how taxes work, including income taxes, payroll deductions, and how to file tax forms.

Investing: Get an introduction to the basics of investing, including stocks, bonds, and retirement accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs.

Insurance & Risk Management: Learn about different types of insurance (health, auto, home, life) and how they help protect against financial risk.

Consumer Decisions & Comparisons: Develop skills to compare costs, evaluate interest rates, and make smart financial choices when shopping or considering loans.

Course Format:

This course blends direct instruction with interactive activities and real-world simulations to give students a strong foundation in consumer math. Students will work through practice problems in class and complete review sheets to reinforce their learning. Quizzes will assess their ability to apply what they’ve learned to real-life situations.

Develop Financial Literacy: Equip students with the knowledge and skills to make informed financial decisions, from budgeting and saving to understanding credit, loans, and taxes. Prepare them to manage their finances effectively in everyday life.
