このクラスで学べること

Welcome to Candy Science Camp!
In this camp, learners will be exploring a different science topic each day using a different candy. (see supply list) The goal is to practice thinking like a scientist by making observations, asking questions, and testing ideas! No matter what the topic is, all learners will be DOING and LEARNING science!

I run my workshops pretty much the same way every time, but know that it is always dependent on the topic and student direction! Here is a typical class format:
*Introduction Game and Class Expectations for Fun
*Ask a question- to get learners thinking about the topic.
*Use that question to fuel a student-centered exploration
 *Class discussion of observations
 *Follow-up and/or extension
 *Closing- share out 1 thing

Here are the topics for Candy Science Camp:

*Day 1: Thinking Like a Scientist with Skittles
*Day 2: Experiment Basics with M&Ms or Skittles
*Day 3: Popping Experiment with Pop Rocks
*Day 4: Density with Gummy Worms and Gummy Worm Stretch Experiment
*Day 5: Physical and Chemical Change Experiment with Sour Candies

PARENTS: Please make sure your learner has the supplies for class each day. There is nothing more heartbreaking than a learner in class not able to participate at home in the lab. I would also encourage you to only enroll learners that love doing science and will be involved! I want this to be an awesome experience for them!
学習到達目標
Over the course of the 5-day camp, learners will be introduced to a number of different science topics that are typically taught at the middle school level.
Day 1: Learners will learn what a phenomenon is and how scientists ask and define problems.
Day 2: Learners will practice asking questions, defining variables, and developing an experiment that collects data.
Day 3: Learner will experiment to find if Pop Rocks make a difference when blowing up a balloon.
Day 4: Learners will explore the density of a gummy worm, and experiment with its stretching abilities.
Day 5: Learners will be involved in a scientific experiment to determine which candy has the highest amount of acid. This will
provide experience in planning and carrying out scientific investigations.

*The only safety issue would be to make sure the learner has an adequate area to conduct experiments. I encourage you to cover the table or desk with old newspaper or plastic cloth. All water activities can be done on a cookie sheet with sides in case of spills. We will be working with water and candy dyes. It is a good idea to have a container of water ready in case more is needed, and one large empty bowl to place "dirty" water. Paper towels (or some sort of towe)l to wipe up spills are essential!
受講に必要なもの
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR LEARNER HAS SUPPLIES READY FOR CLASS BEFORE CLASS BEGINS. In doing so, we can get right into our experimenting and not waste precious minutes finding things!

Every Day: A clear area to work covered in newspaper or a plastic cloth (in case of spills)
Water (either in a container or easy access to a sink)
A large empty bowl to put "dirty water" (Dump bucket)
Cookie sheet to put all materials in; spill prevention
                   Paper Towel
                   Spoons
                   Cup (preferable plastic)
Cupcake Pan-- (dark metal will be too hard to see what's happening. light-colored metal or bright color silicone works)
(other option- white or clear pie or loaf pan) -white paper is needed if using clear
Paper/Pencil or Dry Erase Board/marker to take any notes

**Note about candy: Movie-sized box or smaller of each candy is plenty.
Students are not required to put any of the candy in their mouths but can do so when given the choice.

Day 1: Pie pan or round cake pan or plate. (white)
             Bag of Skittles** (any flavor)
Day 2: Bag of plain M&M's** (or leftover Skittles)
*Students may need to get warm water- depends on their direction during class
Day 3: 3-4 small bags of Pop Rocks
            Balloons (4-5)
Baking Soda, Vinegar (if you have a large bottle of it, transfer some to a smaller container to reduce spillage)
Empty plastic water bottles (at least 2)
            Tissue
Day 4: 3-4 Gummy Worms
            Scissors
Tall clear glass or jar 1/2-3/4 filled with water
Day 5: Pixie Stix, SweetTarts, and leftover candy
            Baking soda
            Water

This list will also be in the classroom a few weeks before the camp.
*ANY QUESTIONS- Please contact me BEFORE the class starts!

Hello and thank you for visiting my page! My name is Lynette Wehner. I am a certified elementary teacher, and a certified Holistic Wellness Coach and I LOVE helping kids explore the world and themselves!

I taught middle school science for over 20+ years and beginning theater for about 10 years and nothing makes me more geeked than to get kids to think, talk, ask questions and explore the world around them! I am so excited to be working on OutSchool because I have met so many awesome learners and nice parents!

I am a digital nomad and travel around the country. My favorite topics are environmental science, plate tectonics, theater, and holistic health! I LOVE coming up with new ideas and new ways to get students excited about learning!

I will be offering a variety of classes in upper elementary and middle school science, drama, general middle school issues, and holistic health/wellness. Other classes will combine my love to focus on certain scientific ideas. Lastly, I am working to create a course that focuses on Next Generation Science and Engineering Practices. Student-Driven Learning is my thing!

As a middle school student, I hated science. I only took what I needed to in high school. It wasn't until I ended up in an ecology class in college that I realized science was interesting! I realized that it was my professor's passion for his topic that lured me in. He was able to get me excited about science and my ability to understand! I strive to be the example my professor was for me for my students.

I have a professional teaching license from the state of Michigan to teach grades K-9.

In my free time, I love to kayak, perform, travel, and spend time in nature!
