Do you have a book report to write and are not sure where to start? Did you know writing a book report is like making a sandwich? Yes, your read that right! If you have the right recipe and ingredients and you put them together in the right order, you can create a ‘delicious’ organized book report that you can be proud of! In this fun two-week class, students will learn how to write a structured book report. Each ingredient of the sandwich represents one of the 7 elements or 'layer' of their book report. This technique shows students that by first organizing their thoughts, and identifying the concepts of the book, then following the recipe, then each layer (or ingredient) fits together to create a finished book report. For example, the top slice of bread represents the Date, Your Name, Title of The Book, Author and if it’s Fiction or Non-fiction. The tomato, lettuce, onion, meat, cheese and bottom layer of bread also represent another element of the report, such as the characters, setting, problems, story climax, solution and conclusion and ending. Students will also learn the parts of a book, such as a spine, cover, author, illustrator, table of contents, copyright information, date of publication, table of contents, and chapters, and the blurb. Week #1- Preparing The Foundation of a Book Report. The Students will be introduced to the parts of a book. The students will also be introduced to the 7 elements needed to create a book report using the ingredients of a sandwich technique. The students will be introduced to the concept of mind mapping, organizing thoughts, rough drafts, and finished products! The students will practice identifying the different parts of a book while learning new definitions and vocabulary. We will also discuss the 7 elements of a book report using sandwich ingredients, -The title, author, genre -The setting -The characters -The problem -The story climax -The solution and conclusion -The favourite or most memorable part and the ending. Week #2 - Writing The Book Report Using their mind map, students will fill in and identify the 7 elements of their book report. The students will work on sentence structure for each element. The students will work on creating their rough draft and writing their book report. Students will complete and submit a final completed book report on a book of their choice. All book reports submitted on time will be given feedback. Due dates are assigned with this course. Students will also be given 3 activity sheets to download to reinforce the vocabulary learned in class. Students will also be provided with a final template to complete their assignment This class is taught using a slide presentation with examples. Students are encouraged to ask questions and to share what book they have read for their report and are also welcome to read their book report in class. I am the published author of The Ultimate Babysitting Course and a book lover. I am excited to teach this concept, and I hope to foster an interest in reading for the learners.
