One of the themes in this book deals with the worry and loss of one of the character's brothers. This brother is in the Vietnam War. As a person who grew up during this time, and as a teacher with a minor in history, I have studied this war and will present only factual information about the war. 

Another theme is about the curiosity of kids who are around someone who is very different from themselves. Zachary Beaver is billed as the "fattest boy in the world". We will discuss compassion and friendship as the story unfolds.

Another section will deal with baptism, in the sense of baptism being something that Zachary Beaver feels that he needs to fulfill a promise to his mother. Baptism will also be presented in the factual sense only.

Google Classroom is used for the student copies of the guided reading questions. They can be printed off for use while reading.
