このクラスで学べること

In this novel, students are introduced to dystopian fiction. Dystopian fiction is a devised reality in which a community has many differing ethics from our societies here in the present. We will discuss and debate these ethical laws and rules that are present in a society where you are to achieve "sameness" through sacrifice.

As a group, we will read together and separately. After the chapters are read, we discuss what has been read and discuss the questions that individuals have come up with. I am a very hands-on teacher and I make sure that each student is addressed and asked to participate in the discussion. There is no previous knowledge or experience needed.

Topics addressed are: the coming of age, loss of innocence, care of the elderly and the newly born, death, assisted suicide, and memories. The themes are: intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom.

Day one: This is an introductory class session for The Giver, I will introduce the dystopian fiction elements of sameness, blind consent from all citizens, distrust of the outside world, and constant government surveillance of civilians. We will have an anticipation guide, where we discuss certain strong statements such as Peace is more important than individual rights. We will also discuss how a society without pain and suffering might sound idea until you consider living without love and happiness. As a group, we will read aloud the beginning chapter to give an overview of the novel. Students will then read chapters 1-5 as homework for the next class. Guiding questions and vocabulary will be provided.

Day Two: As a group, we will discuss the guided questions, content, and any questions/concerns that students may have. Homework for day 3 is to read chapters 6-11, using the guided questions and vocabulary.

Day Three: Discussion of chapters 6-11. Homework is to read chapters 12 - 17
Day Four: Discussion of Chapters 12-17. Homework: read chapters 18-23
Day Five: Discussion of chapters 18-23 and final thoughts, questions, and concerns

I have taught this book to middle schoolers for many years. Some of the topics can be very sensitive, but I always prepare students for what they will be reading. I am very careful and considerate with each learner as they contemplate these topics. I have never had an issue with teaching this book, as I am very hands-on and very honest and open with these topics.
