"Living books possess a narrative style that sparks curiosity and immerses children in the subject matter, making learning an enjoyable and memorable experience. While great books offer a wealth of knowledge and intellectual rigor, living books bring the subjects to life, creating an emotional connection and fostering a deeper understanding."

In this class, students can enjoy an interactive book discussion with a focus on Black History, participate in a discussion, and express themselves through feedback. There will be one book read per class. I will provide slides to facilitate the learning process. This literary club is for everyone interested in learning about trailblazers: Mary Fields, Harriet Tubman, Mabel Fairbanks, and Katherine Johnson.

1. Students will be given a cursory vocabulary guide to help prepare.
2. Young learners can listen to or read the book in preparation for the book club.
3. We will discuss perspectives, character qualities, accomplishments, obstacles, and significance of each book.
4. Learners are encouraged to provide feedback in written, oral, or artistic forms.

Day 1 - "Fearless Mary" by Tami Charles
Day 2 - "An Apple for Harriet Tubman " by Glenette Tilley-Turner
Day 3 - "Ice Breaker" by Rose Vina
Day 4 - "Counting on Katherine" by Helaine Becker
Day 5 - Recap

Dear Parents, Students are expected to read or listen to books prior to class. Please be aware that the subject of skin color, discrimination, segregation, and racism are vocabulary words taught in the class. We are going to be talking about topics that can stir up emotions, memories, and feelings. I would love for you to talk to your child about their own race, ethnicity, and experiences. We will be identifying situations and providing vocabularies to express these concepts. Students can hand in optional homework and it will be returned to them via posts. Sincerely, Teacher Elaine

When I was born my birth certificate read, “Negro”. This is when my story began. In less than a decade, my race went from “Negro” and “Colored” to “Black”. I arrived in America at a local hospital during one of the most tumultuous times in the USA. I have taught a variety of Black History and Cultural related classes on Outschool.

I am an experienced educator who brings cultural diversity into the classroom for enrichment and to broaden our understanding. My formative years were spent in the library reading books or at home in the quietness of my bedroom. Reading is a gateway to knowledge. I believe that book clubs are a great way to foster learning and critical thinking.
Finishing a book provides a sense of accomplishment. I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for reading living books.
