このクラスで学べること

This course offers a unique introductory look at three major scientific studies: osteology (the study of bones), anatomy (the study of bodily structure), and pathology (the study of disease). These three disciplines are closely linked and often overlap, and are used in a variety of professions from archaeology and anthropology, to modern law enforcement and forensics.

Each week of the course will build upon the one before it, allowing students to utilize information they have learned and apply it in a new way every week. At the end of week 4, students will be given information to put together an optional research project and/or presentation related to bones, bodies, and disease, on the subject of their choice. Presentations will be given during the last meeting of the class!

1. Why Should We Care?: The Secrets of the Human Body
2. Introduction to Osteology: Mapping Human Bone Structure
3. Introduction to Anatomy: Mapping the Squishy Stuff
4. Introduction to Pathology: The Evolution of a Pandemic
5. Putting it Together: Pathology in Anatomy & Osteology
6. Forensic Anthropology: Modern Uses for Modern Problems
7. Bioarchaeology: How the Past Informs the Present
8. Student Presentations & Course Review

All questions, from the basic to the complex, are encouraged, including questions about working in the field!

The class is listed as 45 minutes, but depending on class size and level of discussion, may take up a full hour.

The course does require the viewing of images and discussion of subject matter that some may consider disturbing, unpleasant, or graphic. This includes photos or videos of skeletal remains and deceased human bodies in a scientific setting, as well as photos or videos that depict unpleasant physical symptoms of diseases. Also included is discussion of diseases, parasites, human organs and other viscera, as well as discussing how these topics are relevant in a legal setting when addressing forensic anthropology. All of these things are approached respectfully and with a scientific mindset, but students should be prepared. The minimum age limit (11) is a requirement. However, if you have a student close to this age who is interested in the class, please contact me to discuss if the content would be an appropriate fit before enrolling your learner.

I am a practicing bioarchaeologist, and wrote my Master's thesis on the subject of paleopathology of Neolithic populations in North Africa. While I primarily work with people from the past at archaeological sites, I have also worked with police departments as a forensic anthropologist to help identify victims of violent crimes, as well as with public health organisations to determine risk and prevention of disease.
