Expository Essay
Learners will write a two-page minimum expository essay. Expository writing allows the learner to select a topic, and with minimal research, focus on structing an essay to inform their audience.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Revision and short story
Learners will read the selected short story and respond to 1-2 discussions questions in 50-100 words. Learners will also have this time to work on their revisions.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Persuasive Essay
Learners will write a persuasive essay and work on avoiding fallacies. The objective is to incorporate logos, pathos, and the ethos which will be later used with rhetorical analysis writing. This assignment will require a 700-900 word count.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Revision and short story
Learners will read the selected short story and respond to 1-2 discussions questions in 50-100 words. Learners will also have this time to work on their revisions.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Opposing Viewpoints
Learners will write a persuasive essay from the previous assignment, but this time they will focus on the opposing viewpoint further helping them to understand counterarguments and rebuttals. This assignment will require a 500-650 word count.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Revision and short story
Learners will read the selected short story and respond to 1-2 discussions questions in 50-100 words. Learners will also have this time to work on their revisions.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Analysis Essay
Learners will select a short story or novel to analyze using literary devices, theme, or historical allusions with a 1.5 page minimum.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Revision and short story
Learners will read the selected short story and respond to 1-2 discussions questions in 50-100 words. Learners will also have this time to work on their revisions.
 Week 9
Lesson 9
Creative Writing
Learners will learn the basic elements for writing a short story by using Story Mountain with a focus on character development, theme, plot, conflict, dialogue and the incorporation of literary devices.
 Week 10
Lesson 10
Revision and short story
Learners will read the selected short story and respond to 1-2 discussions questions in 50-100 words. Learners will also have this time to work on their revisions.
 Week 11
Lesson 11
Not So Personal Narrative
Learners will write a personal narrative with a twist while incorporating literary devices. This assignment will require a two page minimum.
 Week 12
Lesson 12
Revision and short story
Learners will read the selected short story and respond to 1-2 discussions questions in 50-100 words. Learners will also have this time to work on their revisions.
 Week 13
Lesson 13
Research Paper
Learners will research and write a 900-1200 word paper using MLA or APA citations with a focus on finding credible sources and properly incorporating quotes from their sources.
 Week 14
Lesson 14
Revision and short story
Learners will read the selected short story and respond to 1-2 discussions questions in 50-100 words. Learners will also have this time to work on their revisions.
 Week 15
Lesson 15
In the News Part I: Editorials Part II: Inform, Educate, or Entertain
Learners will write two mini assignments based on journalistic writing.
 Week 16
Lesson 16
Revision and short story
Learners will read the selected short story and respond to 1-2 discussions questions in 50-100 words. Learners will also have this time to work on their revisions.
 Week 17
Lesson 17
Writing a Mystery
Learners will write a mystery with their choice of perspective with a continuation of utilizing elements for writing a short story.
 Week 18
Lesson 18
Revision and short story
Learners will read the selected short story and respond to 1-2 discussions questions in 50-100 words. Learners will also have this time to work on their revisions.
 Week 19
Lesson 19
Common College Application (as many revisions as needed)
Learners will choose a common college application prompt and write an essay of their choice. Learners will complete as many revisions as needed with guidance provided by the instructor.
 Week 20
Lesson 20
Letter to Self
Learners will write a formal letter with a 350 word minimum.
Students will learn how to:
• structure formal essays
• write creative narrative pieces
• apply writing to real-world experiences
• revise and edit their work to produce final drafts
Students will learn how to:
• read for understanding
• understand texts of various genres 
• identify plot and themes
