週1時間. 5-10 minutes of practice, 4-5 days a week is necessary for successful completion of this class. Every song assigned to practice will have a practice video in the classroom to help learners gain confidence and practice for success. Since practicing is a skill that we must build up, this music course is designed to help students learn the value of continual practice and effort in a fun, engaging, and multifaceted way.
テスト
Students are encouraged to unmute and play for myself and one another. Learners may also record themselves playing directly in Nearpod or on the Outschool platform for feedback from me. All feedback will be positive and focused on the continued growth and enjoyment of the learner. Learners will have one on one opportunities with me during class time as well as group study where they will have the opportunity to give and receive help from peers. Once learners pass their mastery check for a song, they will be empowered to self-pace in learning the next song.

このクラスで学べること

Using the Music Learning Theory research of Edwin Gordon and the adaptation of those ideas to the piano by Marilyn Lowe, this method introduces students to the fundamentals of musicianship and music study that will be applicable in whatever direction the learner chooses to take their future musical studies. This class is a starting point for older beginning piano students, and is the continuation of the Keyboard Games, Music Moves for Piano Book B classes ("Introduction to Piano and Music: Music Moves Book B"). If you have questions regarding the best class for your learner, please don't hesitate to reach out! I'm happy to help!

This class has been updated to be an all-in-one class for beginning and continuing keyboard students. With instruction in level-appropriate songs, music theory and reading, improvisation and ear training, this live class will offer the freedom and flexibility for students to set the pace of their advancement. Over the past three years of teaching group piano here on Outschool, I have seen how many learners enjoy having classmates to study music with, but feel frustrated either by being rushed in learning a song or skill, or held back as others work on a song or skill. By teaching new songs through prerecorded videos instead of live in class, I will be free to offer one on one instruction and support during our class time together.

Our weekly class will be typically structured like this:

10 minutes: We will start each class all together in a group with check-ins, physical and musical warm ups and playing for the whole group to get a sense of what we need to work on for the day
10-15 minutes: Breakout Rooms. This is when the majority of learning songs from our book will happen. Learners who are still working on a song will have a chance to review on their own and get personalized feedback from me. In general, there will be three different breakout rooms: a group practice room, a quiet practice room where learners can practice all on mute, and a one-on-one room with me.
5-10 minutes: End of class group time. We will play games, share what we've mastered that week, and set individual and group goals for what we're doing in the coming week.

Class recordings will be posted weekly when they have processed, and practice videos will be posted in the classroom to support learners as they learn the song(s) for the week.

For the topics and suggested deadlines for the songs we will learn in this class, please see the class syllabus.

*** FAQS ***
What does self-pacing mean for a live class?
-I am following the format put out by The Modern Classrooms Project. It means that the majority of my class time, demonstrating the new songs, will be 'outsourced' to me by way of previously recorded interactive videos. Using Nearpod allows me to insert questions and assignments directly into my teaching videos, helping young learners stay focused and engaged, and allowing them to go as slowly or quickly through new material. It also means that I am still there in class to answer any questions. Although they can go faster or slower, there will be 'soft deadlines' when I recommend they have certain songs and activities completed by in order to keep rough pace with this class

Can I join late?
-Yes! I strongly recommend you do the self-pacing/introductory class module FIRST ("Quick-Start to Piano Lessons for Beginners"). Due to the flexible nature of pacing in this class, late enrollments will be accommodated at a level comfortable to them. *Learners who have completed this module will get priority in late-enrollments as spots open going forward.*

How will learners know what to work on while they are in a breakout room?
-Using Nearpod student paced assignments, practice videos, handouts, and the class book, your learner will already have several physical and digital resources to keep them on track. Additionally, I will be checking in with the group, pulling learners out for one-on-one time, and reviewing what everyone is working on at the beginning of class.

What if my learner doesn't understand the teaching video or falls behind?
-I work hard to anticipate what learners will need to learn a song and have taught this material for a few years now, however if your learner is confused, I'm right there in class ready to meet them one-on-one and get them back on track. I won't be busy teaching the song over and over to the 'average' student-instead, I'll be meeting with everyone and giving them individualized feedback.

-If they fall very far behind (illness, family trip, etc) then students in my group lessons may get discounts for booking a one-on-one class with me.

What if my learner wants to work far ahead (way far ahead?)
-That's fine! I've developed this class in this manner precisely to be accessible to all students. Some will want to work a little slower, and some will want to 'zoom' through this book to start Book 2. Since the class is pay weekly, if your learner finishes the material before the class is over, you can withdraw and enroll immediately in Book 2 (which will also be self-paced and support learners joining at any point!)

How and when will my learner read music?
-We will introduce rudimentary reading concepts a few weeks into the course and continue building them throughout the year.

Students may need adult assistance in the beginning to mute/unmute and for using breakout rooms. This class relies heavily on different kinds of technology to deliver some of the class content, and younger learners will need on-site help until we've had a few weeks of practice at the technology and procedures for class. I will also use Nearpod, Google Suite and Canva Slides, as well as Edpuzzle for interactive videos and teaching. An at-keyboard view of the learner is helpful, as it will help me assess their technique and troubleshoot any problems while learning the song. Please ensure that Zoom audio settings allow you to "use original sound," as otherwise Zoom may filter out music as background noise, interfering in our enjoyment of your learner's performance. You should also check other computer/device audio settings as some have preinstalled settings which inhibit the sharing of music.
受講の前提条件
Fine motor skills needed to use individual fingers with good technique. If joining a class late, please start with my introductory module- Quick-Start to Piano Lessons for Beginners.
受講に必要なもの
Students need a weighted or touch-sensitive keyboard of at least 62 keys or a piano. Proper piano technique and positioning is important, so an adjustable bench is very helpful.
Required curriculum is Music Moves for Piano, Book 1, available at MusicMovesforPiano.com, 19.95$ (yellow cover).

15+ years working, performing, and teaching piano, general music, choir, and organ all over the world

As a professional musician and a mom, I put a high value on exposing children to music in fun, uplifting, and creative ways. I particularly enjoy introducing music in ways that support and affirm a student's own innate musical understanding, and help bring that out from the start. I believe in whole child education, understanding that a learner brings their whole self to the lesson, and that my role is to affirm and support their WHOLE self. My ACE Educator workshops focused on different ways to engage the whole child-whether cultural, emotional/SEL, neurodiversity, or other difference, I care about your learner having the best possible introduction to music.

My own musical training included studies overseas, where exposure to a different culture surrounding musical education broadened my own training and goals in teaching beginning students to play. Although I have an affinity for starting students off right as beginners, I have worked with music students of all ages and levels, and value the changing needs and goals when helping intermediate or advanced musicians grow and hone their skills. When I'm not making music and teaching, I'm probably knitting and designing unique knitwear and clothes to wear and gift :-) I also enjoy pottery, painting, and sewing, to name a few things.

Studio policies:
All my classes are currently autoposting recordings. If there's ever a safety reason for a recording to not be posted, you will not be able to view it. If you miss a class, you are encouraged to watch these recordings. I follow all of Outschool's policies regarding refunds and make-up classes.

If you are taking private classes with me, I will always wait at least 20 minutes before closing the section. I otherwise follow the same refund and absence policies as set forth by Outschool: students must be logged in by 10 minutes after the start of class. Given the nature of the classes I teach, I will not teach to an empty classroom, but practice videos will be available when the class listing calls for it.

Many parents are curious about where to start their learners. Here's a quick rundown/sample course of studies:

Younger beginners 3-5:
Ready for Piano->Introduction to Piano and Music Book A, Book B, Then begin Book 1
5-7 Year Olds: Start directly in Book B

Older beginners (8 and up): Beginning Piano Lessons, Book 1. For those who prefer an ongoing course offering, I now offer a class called Piano Level 1, where we cover some of the same materials in Beginning Piano Lessons, but with more abstract concepts of music theory and improvisation. It still includes a lot of fun games, however! :)
