DESCRIPTION: Upon the completion of this course students will be able to additionally define basic Latin vocabulary of approximately 50-80 words; reproduce paradigms of basic Latin forms; identify the grammatical forms and syntactical functions of Latin words of these nouns, adjectives, and verbs; and translate basic Latin sentences and explain their syntax; begin to compose short sentences in Latin. Each class will introduce a new grammar concept, practice and review previous material, and upon completion of a chapter discuss a cultural theme. Beyond acquiring the skills to translate Latin, students will also be learning about the culture, literature, and history of the Classical world. Their English vocabulary will improve. They will better understand English grammar and syntax and they will build a foundation for learning other languages, particularly Romance languages. This class will use the Outschool classroom for assignments, discussions, and other resources. Nearpod, Edpuzzle, google drive, forms, docs, Gimkit, Jamboard and Flipgrid will also be used. FLEX Class: For the FLEX version of this course students will be required to submit weekly homework exercises that correspond to the material being covered in the textbook. These submissions will sometimes be a written assignment and/or a Flipgrid video assignment. Students will interact with each other by commenting on each other's Fligrip posts and completing translations as a group. The written translations will encourage students to pay close attention to grammar and the Flipgrid assignments will allow students to practice their Latin pronunciation. Each week new instructional videos will be posted which students will watch along with the Nearpod presentation. Students are REQUIRED to post at least one Flipgrid video to introduce themselves (audio only is acceptable). All homework exercises completed by hand or on a Google doc will be submitted for feedback in the student’s homework Google Drive folder created for each individual student. The instructions and material for each week will be posted on SUNDAYS. Below is an outline for this course. This course covers Stages (chapters) 4-6 in the required textbook. I love Latin and really anything that relates to the Greco-Roman world. I have an M.A. in Classics that emphasized pedagogy. I also have years of experience teaching Latin to a range of ages and skills levels online and in a traditional classroom. But, no matter who the student is I believe that learning should be a fun and engaging journey!
