♟️ “Chess is the gymnasium of the mind.” – Blaise Pascal Benefits of Playing Chess: - Promotes brain growth - Increases problem-solving skills - It exercises both sides of the brain - Raises IQ - Sparks your creativity - Teaches planning and foresight - Teaches patience and concentration - Optimizes memory improvement - Improves recovery from stroke or disability - Helps treat ADHD ==================== About the Class ==================== In this camp, we will meet 4 times to learn all you need to know to begin your own chess journey. We will start from the very basics to form a strong foundation upon which to build upon. By the end of the course, students will have learned how to move pieces, piece value, how to think critically while playing, how to win, and how to do it all with good sportsmanship and a positive attitude. Chess nourishes the mind and can provide a lifetime of fun and challenges. It's a practice in critical thinking, logic, problem-solving, patience, and mindfulness. Here is a rough course outline: Class 1: Chess board, pieces, and how they move Class 2: Offense and defense Class 3: The opening, the middle game, and the endgame Class 4: Let's play! Everything is learned virtually, and no chessboard is required. The class size is kept small in order to give each student ample attention and to keep the class focused. Private Classes are available upon request at www.good-games.org. After the course, the most important thing will be to play as many games as they can and learn from each experience. Towards that goal, I have created an online chess club called 'The Outschool Gambit', where novice and intermediate players get to play together in weekly live games. Graduates of this course will get the first week for free! This course is perfect for spring break, winter break, and summer vacation learning. ==================== About the Teacher ==================== I fell in love with the game of chess when my dad first taught me to play when I was 7 years old. To this day, it is a precious pass-time that we share. I went on to become the regional elementary champion and participated in the Canadian University Chess Championship as part of the University of Toronto team. I currently hold a rating of about 1900 and would love to share my passion for chess with anyone willing to learn. I encourage a growth mindset in all my classes, to take every win and loss as a learning experience. ==================== Other Classes by Coach Lem ==================== Level-Up Chess (Ongoing) | Openings, Tactics, Traps, and Strategies A weekly class that has a deeper focus on theory and tactics. What do you enjoy? What makes you come alive?
Each person is unique in their interests and passions and one of the joys of life is discovering and exploring them.
I have and Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto in Environmental Physics, and was an Environmental Consultant for 3 years before I discovered my love for teaching and mentoring. From 2015-2017, I traveled around Asia, volunteering as a teacher in rural communities where I taught English, Math, Science and Dance to children ranging from 4-16 years of age. I have been an online teacher to children for 5 years, using gamification to keep learners interested and engaged throughout each lesson.
My interests and expertise are in mindfulness, meditation, music, dance, gaming, and travel. I would be honored to share my passions, fascinations, and knowledge with your children in a fun, creative, and exciting way that will ignite a fire in them as well.
Did I mention I like gaming? Play is an integral part of the human experience and enhances cognitive, social, and mental well-being. Games teach teamwork, sportsmanship, critical thinking, and leadership. I started a company called Good Games where we create a positive space for young gamers to play, learn, grow, and have fun.
